Sunderland to Sign £5million Manchester United Defender
The Black Cats are reported to have bid £5million for United’s on loan centre-half Jonny Evans after 2 successful spells at the Stadium of Light. The 20-year-old played an important role in Sunderland’s Premier League survival but his fee seems particularly high for a youngster who’s made just 3 first team appearances for the Red Devils. There is no doubting the players ability but should Roy Keane be aiming for a higher calibre of player now the Black Cats have cemented a place in the top flight and is the reported fee far too high?
Evans made 16 appearances for the Wearside club this season (15 in the Premier League) and his arrival coincided with the Sunderland’s best run of form. In his 15 League appearances the club won 6, lost 8 and drew once. Therefore his influence on the side was invaluable as Keane’s team only won 11 League games all season. However, after spending large transfer fees on unproven top flight talent such as Kenwyne Jones (£6m) and Michael Chopra (£5m) should the club at least be negotiating a far lower price or aiming for more high profile signings?
We would like to hear your views on Jonny Evans impending arrival and whether you feel the fees being spent by Keane are too high for the calibre of player that is actually arriving. Which realistic signings in your view would help the Black Cats progress up the table next season?

The boy proved his worth to us this season and last but i still think we are paying over the odds for players. I would pay half of that reported fee personally it’s not as if he is anywhere near the United first team

I would be happy with Keane spending 8 million for him. He has natural leadership skills, is calm and collected and forms a brilliant understanding with Nosworthy.
if we spend 5 million on him now, he will be worth 12 million in a couple of seasons time.
He is not unproven in the top flight now anyway, as he spent the last half of the season playing every game…

He’s not unproven; he’s only 20; and he’s worth 5 million all day long!

He’s worth every penny and more.
Jut because at his age he’s not YET ready to be first choice central defender at Man United, doesn’t mean he’s not good enough to be first choice at Sunderland already, and it certainly doesn’t mean he’ll NEVER be good enough to first choice at Man United, just that he’s not there yet.
Anyone that thinks £5m is too much needs a reality check.
We paid £5m for Chopra, and if I had to pick one of those 2 players to be a first choice Sunderland player next year, I would pick Evans every time.
The boy is class, and has well over a decade of top flight career to look forward to. I just hope it’s with SAFC.
In my opinion, Keano should pull out all the stops to get him in… £6m, £7m… even £8m would be worth it, providing he sticks around for a while, and even if he doesn’t, we’d surely still make a profit on him if we paid £8m for him.
Yes, my verdict… well worth it, gerrim in Keano! Pronto!

If anyone thinks that Jonny Evans is not worth £5million then clearly their knowledge of football extends very little beyond their own sofa… A signing of this significance can genuinely only be equalled by the likes of Kevin Phillips, this would represent a huge signing for our club and one which indicates a bright future at the SOL.
I just hope Sir Alex allows him to move on!

I doubt very much that Johnny Evans would go to Newcastle, he loves playing and living in Sunderland and has said so many times. Johnny Evans is worth EVERY penny of £5million and yes, any body who says otherwise clearly has not been watching him this season, the Nosworthy Evans partnership has proved solid this season and it is clear that Nosworthy improves whilst working alongside Evans, this alone is worth £5 million!! I hope that Sir Alex lets him go to Sunderland…
