Can Everton, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Man City or Tottenham Break into the Top 4?
Once again the Premier League top 4 consisted of United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool but a number of clubs are beginning to improve year on year. Some of those sides will be aiming to finally break the big four’s monopoly on the Champions League spots and with 2 clubs outside that elite group winning domestic silverware this season (Portsmouth & Tottenham) the gap may well be starting to close.
The chasing clubs are all expected to invest heavily this summer with Spurs linked to about every player available whilst Pompey are expected to re-sign proven quality in Peter Crouch.
With this in mind, we want to know whether you feel any of those clubs can finally break into the elite four? Let’s hear your views.

Spurs will finally do it next season, the class of player we are targetting will see us through. In Ramos we trust!
May 18th, 2008 at 16:37
Tottenham cant even get in the top 10 never mind break into the top 4 haha
May 18th, 2008 at 16:43
id love to see the spurs do it but i think it will be the same top 4 next year, the year after i think one or maybe two of the top four will lose their places with tottenham and either everton or aston villa creeping in, portsmouth newcastle and man city are a very long way from reaching the top 4.
May 18th, 2008 at 16:53
Spurs could not even break into the top 10 this season, not got a hope in hell of challenging for the top 4. For me there is only one club capable of breaking into the top 4 and thats Everton FC
May 18th, 2008 at 16:54
Spurs to do a Leeds next season, wouldn’t you just love it!!!.
May 18th, 2008 at 17:03
Haha here we go again with the Spurs breaking into the top 4. Despite finishing 11th they have the most votes, maybe they should try getting into the top half of the table first and then try for the UEFA cup next season.
May 18th, 2008 at 17:07
With all due respect I don’t think it’ll be Tottenham. They targeted class players last year and it only got worse. I don’t think any team will break into the top 4, as a Geordie I’m personally hoping it’ll be Newcastle if their is one, but its still unlikely.
May 18th, 2008 at 17:34
Everton. They have the best defence and the best manager. They have also been very consistant over two years 6th then 5th. They have a head start over these teams already, whilst the two closest rivals to break the top 4 (Tottenham and Villa) look like selling their respective best players (Berbatov and Barry)…so, in one word, Everton.
May 18th, 2008 at 17:44
wow for an 11th placed team that sure is optimistic
May 18th, 2008 at 17:48
winning a cup usually only requires on the day performances, a top 4 finish requires a lot of consistancy
May 18th, 2008 at 17:51
I think that Spurs are probably the closest. Then Everton are the two main contenders. After that Villa are a really good outfit and in a few seasons with the right invstment could do it. Pompey Im sorry but I think youve had a really good season but you need a lot more quality and investment in your squad to really get there. But overall I think the top 4 squads are so good that it will still be a little while before the monopoly is broken.
May 18th, 2008 at 17:58
Everyone is saying tottenham finished 11th but everyone knows thats just a bad season and next year we will definitly finish ATLEAST top 6. Tottenham are a bigger club than all the teams named. Luka Modric even knows where bigger than everton, newcastle etc. We have more money. Newcastle and Chelsea both were after him but he came to us and the rest…couldn’t even afford to buy him so good luck trying to get into the champ league with a 15m transfer budget
May 18th, 2008 at 18:11
Tottenham have won less than Villa and Everton (4th and 5th most successful English clubs respectively) and have smaller attendances. I’m also pretty sure Villa are run by a billionaire so they must have a more than £15m to spend. Only Spurs fans think Spurs are bigger than everyone else, they also thought they would finish ATLEAST top 5 this season. Take out the two seasons you have finished 5th and where you finished this season is more or less where you finished every season since the prem began. Dream on!
May 18th, 2008 at 18:16
You are right Villa and Everton are great, I thought we had a few sparce years in terms of silverware at Spurs but we are far more attractive to players than those teams. Lets get it right, if you are a top player then you are going to top 4 then next in line is Spurs…villa, city, everton, Newcastle etc are all much of a muchness and hardly top sides with fanbases out of their area!
May 18th, 2008 at 18:25
Why do you need a fanbase outside of your area, the true fans are from the surrounding areas, that is a typical view of somebody who knows absolutely nothing about club loyalty or supporting your local team. Realistically nobody will break into the top four, the only teams to have any chance are Aston Villa and Everton, basically they have all the structures in place(stadium, quality manager, chairman willing to invest, loyal fans)to break into the top four.
May 18th, 2008 at 18:27
SHUT UP NASTYLEE CHECK THE LATEST RICHEST TEAMS IN THE WORLD LIST. WE ARE AROUND 11TH..EVERON AND ASTON VILLA ARN’T EVEN ON THERE. AND ARE CHAIRMAN GIVES US MORE MONEY TO SPEND THAN YOURS. YEAH YOU MAY BE MORE SUCCESSFUL BUT THATS GOING INTO THE PAST PAST. WE WON A CUP THIS YEAR AND YOU DIDN’T AND WHERE GOING TO WIN MORE THAN YOU WILL IN THE FUTURE WHILE ASTON VILLA HANG ONTO THE PAST TOTTENHAM WILL BE IN THE UEFA CUP AGAIN AND WINNING TROPHIES
May 18th, 2008 at 18:41
Spurs couldent break into a childs piggy bank never mind the top 4.
Villa all the way!!!
May 18th, 2008 at 18:41
PLUS WERE BUILDING A NEW STADIUM AND WILL FILL A STADIUM WEEK IN WEEK OUT IF ASTON VILLA AND SPURS HAD THE SAME CAMPATICY WE WOULD FILL MORE BECAUSE WERE BIGGER CLUB WITH MORE FANS
May 18th, 2008 at 18:46
VILLA’S SQAUD IS NOT AS GOOD AS TOTTENHAMS AND WHERE ATTRACTING MORE PLAYERS AND HAVE ALREADY BOUGHT MODRIC EVEN THOUGH CHELSEA AND NEWCASTLE WERE AFTER HIM. GET OVER IT! WE HAD A BAD SEASON AND WE WERE STILL MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN YOU. YOU WILL NEVER FINISH HIGHER THAN SEVENTH AND WE HAVE GONE THE CLOSEST TO BREAKING THE TOP FOUR THAN ANYONE ELSE WHEN WE LOST OUT TO 4TH ON THE LAST DAY OF THE SEASON WHEN OUR PLAYERS HAD FOOD POISONING SO SHUT UP A WE CANT BREAK INTO A PIGGY BANK BECAUSE WE HAVE GOT CLOSER THAN YOU!
May 18th, 2008 at 19:01
Why does everyone knock Spurs when we are obviously the most ambitious club outside the top 4 by a mile!
May 18th, 2008 at 19:13
Tottenham have the most class, the most money, the ost ambition and the far better quality players and manager, if villa nd everton r better than us then why are they not targetting players like eto’o ? COYS
May 18th, 2008 at 19:14
COYS
May 18th, 2008 at 19:39
How can tottenham be saying they where closest. i think if you cast your minds back everton actually did break the top four so i think that beats your lot losing out to it on the last day with a little bad stomach. And not being biased villa do have money and we finished 6th with the smallest team in the premiership i think you’ll find given 8 or 10 players it would improve our team dramatically also villa have an outstanding youth system with another bunch of good players coming through which will further increase our chances. tottenham just seem to think there great for some reason but i really cant see why.
May 18th, 2008 at 19:49
Spurs are the closest, how bout when Everton actully did it you muppet. The reason u bvlow is casue ur goin for the quik fix just like newcastle do an look wher it gets them. Us (Everton) ans Villa have laid down solid foundaations to build on. I think top 4 will stay the same … but i think everton and villa are more equiped than spurs as they have stabilty and fewer expectations. Spurs always wnt more thn they cn realistically achieve u shuld aim at re-establishing top 6 b4 u look at top 4. Yh u won a trophy bt pompy won a betta ojne and came higher. Dnt get me worong i wuld of loved 2 win the carling cup but just becasue u won it dunt mean ur gunna break top 4. U also dnt have playas in mid to start wiv like weve gt cahill n arteta villa have young and barry. COYB in Moyes we trust
May 18th, 2008 at 19:55
YEAH YOU ARE RICH BUT NOT RICHER THAN TOTTENHAM AND WE ATTRACT MORE PLAYERS AND THAT SEASON WE MISSED OUT ON FOURTH WE WERE FORTH FROM DECEMBER TILL THE LAST DAY OF THE SEASON WHEN WE LOST FROM FOOD POISONONG NOT A STOMACH ACHE AND ACTTUALY IT WAS SERIOUS ENOUGH FOR MICHAEL CARRICK TO PUKE. EVERTON DON’T HAVE MONEY TO HAVE A CONSTITENT TEAM AND AVFC WOULD NEED PLAYERS WORTH 10-20M TO STREANTHEN THERE SQAUD AND ACTUALLY WE HAVE A BETTER YOUTH THAN YOURS O’HARA THE LATEST PLAYER TO COME THROUGH THE RANKS.AND AS FAR AS YOU SAYING TOTTENHAM THINK THERE SO GREAT AND YOU DONT KNOW WHY? WELL THERE WAAAAAAAAY BETTER THAN YOU THATS FOR SURE.AND YOU HAVE A SMALL TEAM BECAUSE YOU DONT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY GOOD AND ALOT OF PLAYERS AT THE SAME TIME UNLIKE TOTTENHAM.
May 18th, 2008 at 19:58
HOW CAN THEY BE MORE EUQIPPED THAN SPURS WHEN WE ARE RICHER AND HAVE A BIGGER AND BETTER SQAUD YOU CUNT. AND I DONT THINK YOU WON A TROPHY THIS YEAR. AND WE SIGHNED LUKA MODRIC WHO IS BETTER THAN CAHILL AND ARTETA PUT TOGETHER
May 18th, 2008 at 20:02
AND POMPEY IN YOUR OPINION ONE A BETTER TROPHY BUT THERE THE SAME APRAT FROM THE TEAMS BELOW LEAGUE 2 ARE IN THE COMPOTINTION BUT WE KNOW THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEND AND POOMPEY BEAT WEST-BROM IN THE SEMI-FINAL AND CARDIFF IN THE FINAL. TOTTENHAM BEAT ARSENAL IN THE SEMI-FINAL AND CHEALSEA IN THE FINAL. AND TOTTENHAM BELIVE THEY CAN FINISH TOP 4 BECAUSE WE HAVE THE SQUAD AND NOT BECAUSE WE WON A TROPHY
May 18th, 2008 at 20:05
what in the croatian league. do u watch it a lot do u. hw is ur squad betta u came 11th even west ham came above u lol. i dnt have a problem wiv spurs apart frm all there fans reli over rate them teams can fluke winnin a cup (cardiff made the final by playin 1 prem team hu ws m’boro) the league is whre u show consitancy.
May 18th, 2008 at 20:07
lol Spurs fans do make me laugh. I don’t care if you had Alex Ferguson as manager and the entire championship winning Man United squad; you’d still do shit!
May 18th, 2008 at 20:20
NOT THE CROTAION LEAGUE ACTUALLY IN EURO 2008. HE SCORED A GREAT GOAL AGAINST ENGLAND WHEN CROATIA BEAT ENGLAND YEAH WE FINISHED 11TH ITS A BAD SEASON IF YOUR A TRUE FOOTBALL FAN YOU AND KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT YOU WOULD KNOW THAT WERE DEFO GONNA FINISH TOP 6 NEXT YEAR..ABOVE AVFC. AND BOB I KNOW YOUR A TRUE FOOTY FAN BECAUSE WHAT YOU JUST SAID WAS EXTREAMLY STUPID IN EVERY WAY AND TOM WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT. ITS NOT ABOUT CONSISTENCY OR WHERE YOU FINISH MAINLY. ALL THAT IS ABOUT IS GETTING YOU INTO COMPETITIONS TO WIN TROPHIES.IT WAS NOT A FLUKE, WE BEAT TO TOP CLASS TEAMS AND EVEN IF IT WAS..WE WON MORE THAN YOU YOU DUMBASS!!
May 18th, 2008 at 20:21
Spurs cant get into the top 4… No way, they have two top 5 finishes and they suddenly think they are big… lets all laugh at them and their arrogant fans… Everton will be most likely next season, then Villa and then Newcastle. The season after that i think it could be any of those 3… Newcastle have done it before, and they certainly have it all set for hitting it big time again in the future if they start producing on the pitch and investing outside it.
May 18th, 2008 at 20:25
???????, Try pressing caps lock fool!… Your the reason why people dont like spurs, and you make the spurs fans in general look bad with that behavior.
May 18th, 2008 at 20:31
Notice mate every1 else is agreen wiv me nt u. So it wuld appear ur the 1 hu dusnt know what there talking about. U try n throw money at it and when it dusnt work we will laff. Eg 16.5 mil on darren bent haha. N whn berbatov goes wht r u goin 2 do. leasdd we cn keep r best plays
May 18th, 2008 at 20:33
SHUT UP VALLE IM JUST BACKING MY TEAM AND I WONT TAKE CAPS OFF BECAUSE SOME LOW LIFE WHO DOSENT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL SAYS SO.TWAT TYPE WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT
May 18th, 2008 at 20:40
Then at least lay of the glue sniffing so you make some sense you retard… Spurs are not fit for 4th get it through you big skull… Everyone have told you so on this site, so go to sleep and save yourself further embarrassment
May 18th, 2008 at 20:46
Nastylee
Spurs have actually won more trophies than Everton, just less titles.
As for attendances - WHL is always sold out. The ground situation is well documented.
Spurs have been run by a billionaire for years and turnover is far bigger than Everton and Villa.
Everton are closest to breaking in the top for at the moment

THE ONLY REASON PEOPLE AGREEING WITH YOU IS BECAUSE THEY EVERON. DAAAHHH I DONT REALLY CARE WHO SPURS SPLASH MONEY ON AS LONG AS WE WIN TROPHIES. AND WHERE GONNA SIGHN ETO’O. DANY LEVY (CHAIRMAN) IS GOING TO SPAIN TO DISCUS CONTRACTS
May 18th, 2008 at 20:54
??????? - you (and people like you) are the reason everyone gets pissed off at spurs fans. Sure, it is possible to have a bad game, or even a bad run of games - but 38 bad games in a row?!?!? Totenham signed modric not because they were rich, but because they were the only club in the world to pay 16 million for him - a player who has performed worse in the croatian league than kranjcar did, who pompey baught for less than 2 million. In terms of ambition, you can not beat portsmouth. everything they are doing, is the best - from there stadium plans and training facilities, to there manager and players. There squad has improved more over the last 3 seasons than any other teams, and whilst last season, they may have punhed a little above there weight, this season (weith there last 4 games) they have underacheived in the league. Everton look most likely to break the top 4, unless aston villa manage to expand there squad with quality players, and keep barry - both seem unlikely. spurs will struggle to get into the uefa cup.
May 18th, 2008 at 20:59
It’s funny how quickly these sorts of things turn into a slanging match. Lets go from the start here, Everton have broken the top four once and have since been a fairly consistent team in the top six. Spurs have also gone close, but in my opinion had a very dodgy time in the transfer market at the start of the season, culminating in a sub par season. It has to be said there are three teams with the solid foundations to challenge the top four and in my opinion they are Spurs, Villa, and Everton. If they invest in the right quality this season then who knows. I personally want to see Spurs do it, but is those teams around us manage it, then hats of to them.
May 18th, 2008 at 20:59
Pete
I think you’ll find NUFC would have paid 16 mill and more for Modric… and more for Woodgate etc
Kranjcar is a smashing player though.
As for training facilities and new grounds I think you’ll find ENIC have got them both almost sorted in N17.
May 18th, 2008 at 21:30
The quality of the second rung is getting very good, but, to get into the top four means that one of the top four must fall away. Who would that be? I don’t see any of them falling away. Every year people reckon Arsenal will go but Forth spot is the lowest they’ve ever been under Arsene. Man U had a really crappy start this year and yet have won the league. Liverpool are statistically the most vulnerable but are any of the second rung really any better than Liverpool (personal biases aside, I don’t think so).
May 18th, 2008 at 21:51
i think next year expert liverpool and asernal to fall down heavy liverpool are going to lose 5 players asernal is going to lose 4 including their top goal score why cant spurs lure him i think spurs and villa are going to be in the top 4 new castle will finish 7th but maybe 2 season they will break ino the top 4 the english premier league is boring we need a change in the top 4 next season
May 18th, 2008 at 22:26
It looks as though Spurs are the biggest club in the world, perhaps Everton,Villa Man City,Pompey Newcastle and the rest shouldn’t turn up for next season. It’s a certainty then, that Spurs will break the mould and achieve a top 4 position with Wendy Ramos. What a load of Bollox!!!!.
May 18th, 2008 at 22:31
LET’S GET IT RIGHT ALL YOU SPURS SUPPORTERS.
SPURS ARE NOT BIGGER THAN THE VILLA & NEVER WILL BE.
FORGET JUST CAPACITY & HISTORY WHERE VILLA ARE FAR BETTER THAN THE SPURS OH & FAN BASE.
THE ONLY REASON SPURS ATTRACT ISN’T BECAUSE THEY ARE A BIG CLUB YOU MUPPETS BUT BECAUSE THEY ARE SITUTATED IN LONDON.
THE CAPITAL OF ENGLAND & COSMOPOLITAN NIGHTLIFE(FULL STOP!)
MOVE SPURS/ARSENAL/CHELSKI UP NORTH & YOU’D BE LUCKY TO ATTRACT CHAMPIONSHIP OR DIVISON 1 PLAYERS (& THAT’S A FACT!!!)
PLAIN & SIMPLE THAT’S THE ONLY REASON CHELSKI WERE BOGUTH BY ROMAN & THE YID ARMY GET INVESTMENT & SAME WITH THE ARSENAL…..WHY DO YOU THINK MITTEL (5TH RICHEST MAN) BOUGHT QPR? BECAUSE OF IT’S HISTORY?, HOW ABOUT FULHAM & ALFAYED?
THE LIST GOES ON.
VILLA ON THE OTHER HAND, O’NEILL (1 OF THE VERY BEST MANAGERS) & LERNER (BILLIONAIRE) BASED ON THE POTENTIAL AT VILLA & NOT THE NIGHT LIFE
May 18th, 2008 at 22:34
i’ll be happy if spurs finish in the top 10 next season. we need to sign 3 or 4 players just to close the 19 point gap between us and everton. ramos will need another 3 years to get in the top 4.
May 19th, 2008 at 00:13
The club with the biggest potential are by far Newcastle United. In terms of fans, the stadium and the recources they have. Newcastle have been ruined by the previous owners, but this will change now..
But not for next year. Probably a close race between Tottenham, Newcastle, A.Villa and Everton..
May 19th, 2008 at 01:41
villa are useless
May 19th, 2008 at 02:24
The table doesn’t lie. Spurs finished in the bottom half because they had a bad season and a crap team and manager. Everton and Villa are clearly the best two options for breaking into the top four. As for Spurs ambitions… well ambition is one thing, but signing quality players and making them play well is another thing.
May 19th, 2008 at 03:58
wow ive never heard such rubbish before, these are the facts tottenham are a sleeping giant, massive world fanbase, always fill stadium, and everytime you read comments from opposing managers after we have played them, they always say the same thing, tottenham are a great side who have massively under achieved, and should be a lot higher in the league, coppell and steve bruce, redknapp, benitez, to name a few, just check the papers. next we are a very rich club run the right way making a profit, not like other teams running at massive bank debt, and we know who they are dont we.
all tottenham need to break into the top four is a good attitude on and off the pitch, giving 100% ,and never giving up till the final whistle blows, and sad to say , that didnt happen last season, a lot of the players just dont have strong wills, so who says we are a big club , all the opposing managers after we play them, and you lot cant say you know better than them, can you, they know the truth.
May 19th, 2008 at 05:13
I THINK NEWCASTLE WILL BE THE TEAM THAT CAN BREAK INTO THE TOP FOUR.NOE WE ARE AFTER ARDA TURAN A PLAYER WHO BARCA WANTED TO SIGN.AND WE WILL SURELY GET HIM.AND I THINK SPURS IS JUDT WASTING THEIR MONEY.ETO WILL NOT PERFORM IN THE EPL.IF U JUST WATCH THE MATCH THAT BARCA PLAYED AGAINDT MANU AT CAMP NOU , YOU GUYS CAN UNDERSTAND THAT.THIS WAS THE STORY WHOLE SEASON.AND YOU GUYS ARE GOUING TO SELL BERBATOV.THAT GUY IS A RAEL QUALITY.TRY TO KEEP HIM IF YUO WEANT TO ENTER THE TOP 4.AND LUKA MODRIC… I DONT THINK HE IS AS GOOD AS KRANJCAR.
May 19th, 2008 at 08:20
Being a neutral i have to say that spurs are the 5th best team in the PL simply because of the fact that they have a bigger worldwide fan base and have more money. they are the 11th richest football club in the world and have arguably better quality players than Everton and villa. spurs are richer than teams like InterMilan and Roma. They have approx 50M to spend every season and their football is more attractive than some of the top 4 . This added to the fact that they are based in London makes them attractive to top players like Eto and Berbatov. so, Even though Everton and villa have played more consistant football this season without winning anything i would have to say Spurs are the more likely to break into the top 4 and i think they are the favorites to lift the UEFA cup being unlucky to be Knocked out by sevilla in semis in 06/07 season
May 19th, 2008 at 08:49
Who are you kiddin?… Your not a neutral u mug… Anyone neutral thinking spurs have bigger worldwide fanbases than Everton, Villa and indeed Newcastle is retarded… In the entire history of the EPL spurs have been a mid table team or below, bar 3 seasons where the highest they have performed is 5th!… They have NEVER played champions league in modern times and they currently hold 36.000.
May 19th, 2008 at 09:45
Why oh why does every other Premiership club feel the need to constantly knock Spurs…we are a side with true ambition, and now have a manager of proven top class quality ! As a club we have a great history, and no-one can deny we play football (poor defence aside) the way it should be played. We had a disaster with Yol in the 1st part of the season, which left us with nothing to play for outside of the cups. We have plans afoot for a new higher capacity stadium, an exceptionally high transfer budget (in comparison to the other chasing pack teams) and a ruthless man now at the helm. I concede that next season might be a little too soon, perhaps…Once Ramos has shaped the team into his own, Spurs will get there !
May 19th, 2008 at 09:59
Spurs, 5th best team in the EPL, bigger worldwide fanbase than Everton, Villa & the Barcodes, more money!!!
What drugs are you people on???
“…their football is more attractive than some of the top 4″
that would be the defence then?
“always fill stadium”
is that the record-breaking 36,000 capacity White Hart Lane?
“ITS NOT ABOUT CONSISTENCY OR WHERE YOU FINISH MAINLY”
really, quick tell Derby i’m sure they’ll be chuffed
Spurs fans; it’s the same at the end of every season you all harp on about how great you’re going to be but always then flatter to deceive, although I have to admit the food poisining was a classic.
Take a note from Henry Ford and wait till you’ve actually achieved something in the Premier League before mouthing off;
“You can’t build a reputation on what you’re going to do”
May 19th, 2008 at 11:24
I’d have to say manchester city have the best and most experienced manager out of any of the teams mentioned (depending on ericksson not leaving). And with us signing Dos Santos, Deco and Ronaldinho from Barcelona and Peter Crouch on his way we will be the best attacking team outside the top 4 with elano and petrov already performing well for city. Also with 2 of englands most promising players in Micah Richards and Joe Hart, and with Ericksson you never know who will come in, for example he brought in Corluka, Fernandes, Elano, Bojinov and they were all un-heard of and now we know their true quality, I think we will knock Liverpool off fourth spot.
May 19th, 2008 at 11:38
City have to much trouble going on to even be considered… That Thai dude will ruin any chances of success…
May 19th, 2008 at 17:51
As a villa fan i think spurs are defo the biggest teams out of the teams being named including villa. saying because tottenham are in london is stupid and discracing avfc fans. tottenham are a far better team than avfc and a bigger club, richer club, richer owner, attract more players because there better. I need more avfc to stand up and say that. One day i hope avfc will break the top 4 (that will never happend tottenham will doi it but) and that maybe im wrong but if you look at the top 20 richest teams in the owrld..aston villa are top even top 20..spurs are around 11th. There is probably no point avfc, nufc.pompey and other teams to try and buy eto’o because spurs are more llikley than the rest to get him (apart from chelsea, man u)
