Giovani Dos Santos: Have Tottenham Signed a Talent Packed Wonderkid or Overrated Youngster?

Giovani: Great Young Signing or Unsuitable for the Premier League?Barcelona have announced the sale of Giovani Dos Santos to Tottenham for a reported fee of 6 million Euro’s with a further 5 million to be paid based on appearances. The deal also involves a 20% sell-on clause to be paid to Barca if the player is sold within the first two years at White Hart Lane and 10% anytime after.

The 19-year-old has reportedly signed a 5-year contract with the club until 2013 and becomes the 2nd major signing of the summer after Croatian Luka Modric’s arrival. Giovani made 38 appearances last season and scored 4 goals. He played in 28 League games, 5 Champions League matches and 5 Spanish cup matches. He joins Tottenham with a reputation as a skilful creative player who ended his Barca career on a high with a hat-trick in his last ever appearance for Catalan club away at Murcia.

This signing is a major coup for the North London club with reports that both Chelsea and Manchester City were also after the youngster and is another example of Juande Ramos ability to attract big name stars.

However, there are doubts about the players suitability to the physical nature of the Premier League as he was often found wanting in the far less demanding Spanish Primera Liga. The fact that Barcelona are willing to sell after just one season must also be questioned. So do you think Giovani Dos Santos is an excellent coup or do you fear his game isn’t suited to our League or the team? Let’s hear your views on Spurs 2nd major summer signing.

  1. Gio Says:

I am chuffed with this signing, young, gifted and an example of just what we can do now Ramos is in charge. If signings like Giovani and Modric don’t convince Berbs to stay then he is a fool

    COYS

  2. Gunnersaurus Says:

Another waste of money for the spuds more luxury players for a side with no backbone…expect to do a Leeds in a few years, big spenders, no success!!!

  3. YTL Says:

    Gunnersaurus
    Win anything lately ??

Sounds like sour grapes to me

  4. coys Says:

ok let me say this henry, drog, ronaldo first season in prem …..so give the lad a chance hes has great talant an let it be at that

  5. Brendan Says:

Gunnersaurus - why do all your lot come on this site rubbishing Tottenham all the time?? We have signed a talented youngster with bag loads of potential for under £5m, which is peanuts in todays market and considering we sold Mido for £6m last year!!
We dont know how he is going to do yet but hardly a big spend, also how’s signing Samir Nasri going?? - Oh sorry!!!
Plus our backbone is going to rectified in the summer Modric and GDS already signed up, Lassana Diarra will come too.

  6. justin Says:

    another bitter gooner me thinks!

  7. coys Says:

gunnner….no success bew mangaer an we won a cup already…where yer back bone……they hall have retired, yer a so called top club an won nothing for 3 years…….ramo knows what he sdoing an that scares the crap out of ye now. go back to ur own blog an worry bout ur own unknown tranfers

  8. Santos Says:

Gunnersaurus - You are the ones who have mortgaged your future and are wallowing in debt, we’re in the black. Expect a few more 5-1’s!

  9. pani Says:

well just like you are doing now…no trophies in 3 years….what a bunch of losers…poor gooner or is that goners

  10. coys Says:

excitint times for us at mo now berba to stay an have a nice 433 modric dos an berba…sour brapes, for under 8 mill an hes young what a great coup by ramos

  11. tom richards Says:

In terms of price valuation in todays football, the fee is hardly a risk. I think if he flops his reputation will ensure that in 2 or 3 years he will still be worth more than this fee, even if he doesnt play. In terms of his strength for the ruthless premier league, im unsure if its paramount importance, I say this because all Arsenal plays were being mocked pre-season last year for the same reaosns, and they were much more successful than predicted. fingers crossed.

  12. coys Says:

    time for the mexican wave..wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  13. mike Says:

brendan u took the words out of my mouth its getting boring reading gunnersaurus’s pathetic comments, sad gooner.

  14. Yidstar Says:

I like the look of him but hope he is given time to bed in, still think Taarabt is every bit as talented though and should be given a chance

  15. StevenageYid Says:

For Giovani Dos Santos read Jose Dominguez

  16. Brendan Says:

    He must be lonely.

  17. fiftypeehead Says:

We wont do a Leeds but we do need a better spine. A CDM and a CB are a must if we want to do better next year. I dont know much about Dos Santos to be honest, but who is better qualified to judge players in Spain than Ramos? No one COYS

  18. stuart Says:

calm down gunnersauraus, this along with modric are two amazin signings for spurs, as they would be for Most prem teams, as for no backbone bit harsh but fair enough we do need a better holding midfielder in the makalele esq catagory, but with Senor Ramos in charge i have no doubt he has spotted this and we will sign more reinforncements.

But seriously We have set the marker two BIG signings already and most clubs have yet to make their moves, we are setting the standard in the transfer market, so Gunner scum (gunnersauraus) i believe u should worry about ur trophyless new stadium , and strengthen ur already weakened squad bye bye flamini bye bye hleb!!! plus u already had too small a squad!!

The futures bright, the futures LilyWhite

    COYS!!

  19. justin Says:

i think u will find that spurs are one of the most financially stable clubs in the premiership and with ENIC being second only to mr abromovich in the premiership rich list i dont think the club have any debt worries.

  20. Gunnersaurus Says:

He is not as good as our young Mexican Carlos Vela who cost a fraction of his price, ripped off again Spuds! How many PL trophies have you lot won???

    Always in our shadow!

  21. Brendan Says:

Now we have stared to Ramos revolution, I think its time to get rid of some of the dead-wood. Rocha, Gardner, Chimbonda, Dawson, Stalteri, KPB will leave, possibly Robbo, Zokora too.

  22. coys Says:

our squad is gettin stronger………an arse is gettin weaker

  23. GioWasHisNameO Says:

Errm… COYS, stop posting, you’re giving the rest of us Spurs a bad name, either that or re-read what you’re posting.

Gunnersaurus… like your name… an extinct breed, bit like your chances of ever seeing any silverwear at your theatre of whispers.

Gio will be a top quality addition, whether Berbatov stays or not is not a big worry for me, Ramos seems to be a very astute manager and the people signing seem to believe in him.

  24. StevenageYid Says:

I’m not convinced this is a good signing - If he was that good Barcelona would not be selling him. I’ll wait and see but I fear another Dominguez. I really hope I’m wrong.

  25. Deano Says:

I do believe that Arsenal were interested in ‘Gio’ as well as Modric, and Bostock (and before that Zakora)???

And who did they end up signing for! ;o )

I would suggest the the ‘goons’ remove any ‘Brasso’ or ‘Duraglit’ form their regular shopping lists… You wont be polishing anything; anymore, for quite sometime!!!

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

PS. £32 million for ‘Adebayor? Are you having a laugh?

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ahhhh

PPS. ‘Nasri’… now thats a waste of money (and wages)

  26. Fatblokes Says:

    gunnersaurus..or is that sore arse

why u wasting ur time on here if ur lot are sooooo good,
face it pal, ur worried, just like the rest of ur so called mob……usual mouthy gooners

was at a concert at ur hole the other day, had to take me own cup for a beer, cos u aint got none

come visit us at WHL, if you dare

  27. Brendan Says:

Do you not think that quality is sometimes reflected in price? and who is Vela? Where was he last season? How many goals did he score? 3 goals in 33??

GDS has played in champions league already and forced his way into their first team squad this season, slightly higher level than Osasuna.

  28. coys Says:

how am i givin others spurs a bad name

  29. GioWasHisNameO Says:

StevenageYid, Dominguez played for Birmingham City before us… a far cry from Barcelona…

  30. James Says:

What does this mean for Lennon?
I kno he didnt hzve the best of seasons last year, but he still showed flashes of brilliance, and I really like him as a player.

Gio, Lennon and Modric are all fantastic players, but surely they cant all play in the same midfield, it would be far to lightweight, especialy against the prems hard-tackling, kicking teams like Everton, Blackburn and Bolton. I dont think they can all play together personaly, unless they all gain about 5 stone in muscle over the summer, plus learn how to defend. The only way this lot can play is with one up top and 2 defencive midfielders.

However, I’d personaly rather drop Lennon than Keano, and stick to our 4-4-2, and have Modric and Gio on the wings.

    COYS

  31. optimist Says:

dont forget barca have let other players go soon whov turned out to be stars, Quaresma and Riquelme included.
thets hope theyve done the same with gio

  32. coys Says:

its a squad game players no now they will have to fight for ther eplaces…..look at this…….last 15-20 minutes bring on lennow…..that is great choice to have also with 7 subs

  33. GioWasHisNameO Says:

    COYS see your quotes below:

“excitint times for us at mo now berba to stay an have a nice 433 modric dos an berba…sour brapes, for under 8 mill an hes young what a great coup by ramos”

    Sour brapes anyone??

“gunnner….no success bew mangaer an we won a cup already…where yer back bone……they hall have retired, yer a so called top club an won nothing for 3 years…….ramo knows what he sdoing an that scares the crap out of ye now. go back to ur own blog an worry bout ur own unknown tranfers”

So we have a bew mangaer do we?

The case for the prosecution rests your honour.

  34. Brendan Says:

James, I think I am right in saying that GDS is left sided so wouldn’t be brought in to dislodge Lennon, more like for Steed. However I think that Ramos is looking to shape a team to play a 4-3-3 formation. Gio, Berba and Keane up top.

  35. Deano Says:

    Re. Brendan

I think the ‘Prince’ might come good, I just hope that We keep the ‘Hudd’ and Jamie.

Let’s end all this Berbatov/Dantchev saga now, and make a decent bid for Huntelaar… the boy is class (watch how his price rises after the euro’s)

PS. “Gunnersaurus” Your Mum left her knickers here… last time I saw ’skid-marks’ like that, I was at Heathrow”!

  36. sammyyid Says:

The same carlos wjo nearly got his team relegated, because they are crap…. i love the fact that gooners come on to our blog… jealous me thinks!

  37. coys Says:

what u talkin a about we had a new manaher an won a trophy……..get real kid i no what im sayin is true

  38. StevenageYid Says:

GioWasHisNameO - Good point I hope you’re right.

  39. GioWasHisNameO Says:

COYS Patron Saint of The Pismronunciation of Worms

“Good evening. I am the president of the Loyal Society for the Relief of Suffers from Pismronunciation, for the relief of people who can’t say their worms correctly, or who use the wrong worms entirely, so that other people cannot underhand a bird they are spraying. It’s just that you open your mouse, and the worms come turbling out in wuck a say that you dick not what you’re thugging to be, and it’s very distressing”

  40. epochery Says:

i have seen this guy a few times and looks an excellent signing for us. probably wont play every week, but a very good signing in the mould of player we need.

  41. coys Says:

    coys

  42. Spursfan Says:

Sounds very similar to me to what we were saying when we signed Adel Taraabt. No doubt the kid is talented, but he never got a chance when personally I think we had the perfect opportunity to experiment with the consistently dull performances our ‘regulars’ were putting in after the Carling Cup Final. Dos Santos sounds as if he has more potential already, just hope he gets the chance to show what he can do if he doesn’t settle in immediately.

  43. Dave Says:

StevenageYid, Barcelona have allowed plenty of top players to leave, Quaresma, Riquelme, Saviola and Fabregas to name a few and at the price we are paying it ain’t rally a risk

  44. GioWasHisNameO Says:

Well I hope so too. It does seem very cheap for a guy who the media have touted as the next Ronaldinho.

I think he looks class. Looking class and being class are two very different things though, we saw that from Postiga.

Having said that, weren’t the same people who are questioning the purchase of Gio the same people criticising the purchase of Berbatov?

  45. Deano Says:

I am going to audition for ‘Britain’s got talent’ next year (stand-up comic), and I just wondered if I could get some feedback, on My 2 best jokes?

    No 1. the ‘goons’ want £32 million for ‘Ade-Buys-Whores’. ;o )

No 2. I just saw on some ‘goon’ newsfeeds… they are about to sign ‘Kaka’ as well as Nasri. ;o )

“Well… what do You think, will they get Me to the final”?

    D. (’Better Dead… than stinking ‘nomad’ red’)

  46. Ben Says:

He’s played on the biggest stage in the world, scored a hattrick for one of the ebst clubs in the world and is only 19. He will adapt to premiership football

  47. James Says:

I think that Modric will play on the wing, mainly because he is so small, that coming up against big centre midfielders, like Diop, or that Makoena blackburn have and players of that size. even smaller ones, chances are they will be bigger than modric, hes 5″7, and pretty weedy. Im not doubting his footballing talent, but i can see him being over run in the middle of the park, and think he would be better suited on the wing.
But hey well see come the Euros and next season, and i really hope i eat my words and he becomes a centre mid star..

P.s. andyone see gio’s chip on the last game of the spanish season?

  48. Spur’ed Says:

coys .. he is talking bout his spelling.

gunnersauraus - vela is a good player, but you snapped him up way younger ala Frabegras so price doesn’t come into play here. Agreed it was an astute buy for the Gooners.

As for Gio, he has the talent as he proved in his last game for barca. Can he be consistent? Who knows…the thing is the potentially is there and thats why spurs have laid out for him and why others were in the mix.

Sour grapes or not..if you think about this as a true lover of football its just another gifted individual playing in our league…and a great capture for Spurs.

    Here comes the CL!

  49. Brendan Says:

GioWasHisNameO - loving the Pismronunciation of Worms. Class

  50. GioWasHisNameO Says:

I’m going on Britain’s Got Talent as a Ronnie Barker/COYS impersonator.

  51. Finchley Spur Says:

I have to bring to all gonners attention u won fcuk all again, you are fast becomming also rans, your squad choked last year and it still doesnt worry you, you are not a attractive destination for world class talent because of arsen’s self imposed reluctance to (a )spend money and (b)pay a decent wage. Are you closing the gap on the big 2 Man Utd and Chelski I doubt it.

  52. jayt Says:

he needs to bulk up but so did c ronaldo when he first came, he has to be good to get over 30 appearences last season for possibly the best squad in the world, n hes only 19 remember, ramos has a big reputation in spain and dos santos wanted to leave for him. he cud be great

  53. Gunnersaurus Says:

closing the gap????? lol are u having a laugh you were 11th..your new manager is bringing in more attacking players to a side with no defence…is he a genius??? lol

  54. coys Says:

gunnner its not even pre season jus yet…..he will be buyin an selling more players u shud be more worried about ur own team

  55. Finchley Spur Says:

can you read the gap between you and the top 2 is widening and the remainder are closing in on your inexperienced underachieving squad

  56. Gunnersaurus Says:

very clever, lets talk about the gap between us shall we? close are you???

  57. thfc Says:

Barcelona also let diego armando MARADONNA go after 1 season and he did’nt do too bad, ehh!!!

  58. YTL Says:

Gunnersaurus - you hated so much by Arsenal forum users you got to come here for kicks ?? - get a life.

  59. CrazyConrad Says:

Barcelona also let Fabregas and Pique go…

  60. coys Says:

why all the cons…season dint start yet ….some jealous people out there……we will be entertained next season no matter what …modric an dos………….whos next

  61. IQATL Says:

How can we be a new Leeds when we have the most viable club in the PL (recent report) and continue to be on of the only clubs to make profit!?

    Muppet!

  62. coys Says:

    most profitable club outside cl

  63. GioWasHisNameO Says:

GunnerSoreArse - 3rd is a second placed loser son!

    Let’s count cups this season…

  64. Arse is getting weak! Says:

Just like a dinsosaur, gooner scum come out with extinct arguments.I think they’re getting worried. As for this one he wants to make new friends either that to try and spread his bitterness around here,it won’t wash though we’ve just signed GIO.

  65. jimbo Says:

gunner twat’s, how many trophys have you won in the past 3 years??? Even MK Don’s have won more than you

  66. 61 never again Says:

Yet more deluded spurs fans, its the same year after year, this is our season, weve won the mighty Carling cup. Arsenal have won nothing for 3 years etc, lol, what have the scum won lately apart from 2 meaningless cups which mean nothing to big clubs, but to a small club like spurs it must feel like winning the premiership, not that you will ever know the feeling of being premiership champions. You mugs harp on about how great you are, lol, how many points did you finish behind us last season, and the season before that, and that etc, and yet you seem to think the gap is closing! It doesnt matter who you sign, who we sell, fact is you wont, yet again, get anywhere near us. Yet another mug signs for you, wow what ambition he has coming from a team in the champions league to an average team playing in the UEFA cup, another misfit! Keep dreaming bitter yids and maybe one day you will become a big club

    Always in our shadow

  67. Steve Says:

season before that it was 5 and season before that was 2. we had a poor start last season and it wont happen again

  68. Steve Says:

and we lead you for 7 months so dont get all cocky about ur “success” because youve won nothing all for 4 years not 3

  69. YTL Says:

Yet again another Gooner loser, who must be hated by other Gooners, has taken time out to post here - get a life .

If it didnt scare you so much, you wouldnt post about it.

And i bet if any good team outside of the prem - Inter/AC/Juve/Real/Barca come looking for your players - they would leave in seconds, you arnt as big as you think you deluded think you are…..

    Bye bye Flamini……

5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham, 5-1 to the tottenham
Childish i know *shrugs* hey ho !!!

  70. Jack Says:

Another sad, lonely, pathetic gooner scumbag.
I have never been to an arsenal website in my life as I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in reading what you arrogant pricks are up to, yet you keep reading about our club and leaving your idiotic little comments?
Typical ar5ena1 fans, ignorant pricks who know nothing about football!!!

  71. The Offside Trap Says:

Err thanks 61 never again for that marvellous piece of writing. Nothing of note to write on your own forums today or for the last three years I imagine.

Anyway I didn’t come here to talk down to the likes of you. If I wanted to do that I would have become a special needs teacher or worse still a steward at the Emirates.

What I did want to come on here to say is that what people fail to point out is that GDS is a left sided player with a left foot. At last - its taken about 5 managers to work out that this will balance the side out. We have bought potential but at £4.7 million thats nothing in today’s currency (as much as it pains me to say so).

A balanced side with decent coaching can work wonders. Last season there were too many “oddballs” in the side with right footed left backs and so on but at last it looks like we can put out a side where everyone should be under no illusion as to know what they have to do.

Expect a centre back and defensive central midfielder to follow but with the right mentality (and lets face it BMJ didn’t really do well on this front) a move up the table and some more decent cup runs should be possible. The signings of Hutton and Woodgate in the winter will start to flourish in the new season too.

And to any rogue Woolwich Wanderer on this site, my optimism doesn’t mean a top four spot as your paranoia always seems to think, but the foundtions to do so in the next two or three seasons.

With the “credit crunch” kicking in and clubs debts being under greater scrutiny from the likes of UEFA and Fifa, Spurs are still the best placed club to take advntage of any slip ups. More so with Ramos at the helm.

    COYS

  72. James Says:

The offside trap, well said, couldn’t agree more, especialy with the final bit.

  73. FabisOOOFFFFFFFF!! Says:

Right foot or left foot the boy is class, play on the left wing, play on the right wing or just behind the front two!! Now all you goonies can get back to a nice French speaking forum!!hahaha gippo’s ya is and will allways Be,amen.

  74. Lillywhite Says:

I’m sure Ramos will be flexible in his willingness to employ both a 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 w/ varied personnel, but suspect the former is better. W/ license to roam, GDS seems best suited for the left wing as the boy’s ability to take on players and whip it in from the left is ideal. Bentley/Lennon on the right and Modric attacking/left side of the Middle will work. Of course, this highly offensive midfield requires a holding player, the quality of which we currently lack…

  75. 61 never again Says:

So this is an exclusive yid only forum is it, yet more delusion from the yids who think they are much bigger and better that they really are, just remind me how many times you have won the league, fa cup etc!

    keep dreaming sour yids

    always in our shadow

  76. YTL Says:

    “always in our shadow”

i see no sourness here - just Ar5ena1 tossers trying to look as though they arnt bothered by the signings we make, but truth be known, it really does bother you, or you wouldnt post about it.

  77. YTL Says:

  78. Corp Jones Says:

THEY DON’T LIKE IT UP THEM!!

  79. Corp Jones Says:

I think all you STRAY goonie’s are all in this spurs topic, for one thing and one thing only.Negative BIG FOUR DROSS etc,etc go back and read some goonie comments, you all come across as one, total waste of space. You boys should be worried about adebutta, and fab wot with flambo and pleb. WHAT ain’t you got no cherry-picked africans at a secret feeder club in Belguim this year to buy on the cheap, lol!! You say your’re a big club, adebutta is on 35k,berba and keane and woodgate are on 60k, thats way you’re players are leaving,wInge-r don’t think he has to pay the going rate,NOW WHO’S DELUDED,HAHAHA!! COYS!!!

  80. Arse is getting weak! Says:

I personally welcome all these comments from the woolwich boy’s,it is all down to them being worried, that 5-1 victory would never have happened under Jol and they are genuinely worried about Ramos,it’s good to see their childish whinings.Makes me feel a whole lot better.COYS!!

  81. LOL Says:

Q: What is the difference between Arsenal and a cup of tea?
A: The tea stays in the cup longer!

  82. superbill Says:

Guys we all know 61 and Gunnersaurus are getting more and more insecured as years go by. We all understand why they are very worrying as Spurs squad is ever improving and is getting better with more quality signings. They have nothing to look forward to except to talk about the past glories cause they know that they have no chance and unable to close the gap with the top 2. If any of the non top 4 EPL team were to break into top 4, the likely casualty is either Liverpool or Arsenal or both…..obviously they will be worried after so many years dominating the top 4. Is very pitful of them to live in fear as their behaviour shown that they are scared to admit the fact that Gunner is not progressing but Spurs is. Lets all feel sorry for them……Amen

  83. yid_pride_1882 Says:

    Gunnersaurus…..
Why reply to this guy…waste of space. He should just concentrate on his team and why everyone seems to want to leave. It’s like there is a civil war and everyone wants to escape and are afraid for their lives. A top 4 team-that has no respected captain and money grabbers. Think about why they and others have already broken contracts to get out of there. Can’t you see your ‘great’ team have problems back stage!!!

  84. 61 never again Says:

So being a big club is all about how much players are payed is it, what a wally you are, being a big club is about being successful, winning meaningful trophies, (not the carling cup) playing in europes elite competition, (not the UEFA cup), not a little club like spurs who have won only 2, yes 2 league championships in their entire history, lol how pathetic is that, just think in 3 years time it will be 50 years since you last won the championship, how embarrasing! So yet again its easy so say that spurs are NOT a big club, will NEVER be a big club and will ALWAYS be in the shadows of their illustrious neighbours. Has the deadline for signings passed, you keep going about how the gap has closed, well just wait and see next season, as usual pre season is your best time for talking, because as soon as the season starts you melt away as usual, why should next season be any different? When its first 11 v first 11 you cabt get anywhere near us, as the facts show, so keep dreaming you .

    Always in our shadow
