Tony Cascarino: ‘Wrong to Play Semi at Wembley’: What do Arsenal, Everton, Man United & Chelsea Fans Think?
This weekend both FA Cup semi-finals will be held at Wembley and I don’t like it. As a player I had it myself back in 1994 with Chelsea when we faced Luton at Wembley and even then it was wrong as Wembley was built for finals, a grand stage and not for semis.
There are enough big Premier League stadiums around for this not to happen and the fact that the 2nd of the matches involves teams from the North-West makes this move ridiculous. Both sets of fans will now have to travel a long way leading to more expense when the game could easily have been held closer to home such as at Anfield or at Eastlands or wherever they chose.
The explanation given by the FA for doing this will be to allow more fans to attend such a big match but for me, it’s pure money grabbing. More punters means higher prices to earn the Football Association more money. That’s what it is. The FA Cup shouldn’t be about that and holding semi-finals at Wembley is not about the fans, it’s purely about finances and that’s fundamentally wrong.
The fans of the clubs involved will no doubt enjoy their big day out at Wembley but it does take away from the prestige of playing at the national stadium which is sad.
