Breaking reports in the Belgium press suggest both Everton and Aston Villa are in negotiations to sign Standard Liege’s midfield star Axel Witsel. The 21-year-old is one of the hottest properties in Europe after excelling for the Belgium champions alongside highly-rated Steven Defour. However, his stock has fallen in his homeland following a red card for a horrific leg breaking challenge on Anderlecht’s Marcin Wasilewski back in August.

Euro 2008 champions Spain look set to build on their superb 100% record in Group 5 as they host a Belgium side that has already lost three of their 6 games. On paper this looks an obvious home win and despite the absence of the excellent Andres Iniesta, I can’t see the Spanish having a problem.

There are a number of Premier League clubs in the race to sign Standard Liege’s Belgian starlet Steven Defour this summer. Liverpool were thought to have jumped to the head of the queue after impending rumours of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano’s likely exits. However, Everton have reportedly made a £13m offer after previously having had a £9m bid rejected for the exciting player and Aston Villa are also long-term suitors. There’s likely there’ll be a bidding war waged for the young playmaker due to the player being linked to at least 7 Premier League clubs.
