Euro 2008: Group D: Sweden v Spain: David Villa & Co. to Fire Spaniards Through to the Next Round?

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Both nations kicked off their Euro 2008 Group D games with wins and look odds on to reach the knock-out stages. However, it was Spain who looked the most impressive in their 4-goal demolition of Russia with Valencia star and top target of much of the Premier League David Villa scoring a hat-trick. This was the first treble by a player in the Euro’s for 8 years since Patrick Kluivert achieved the feat. The fact that Villa’s hat-trick came against a sound defensive outfit in the Russians illustrated why so many clubs are interested in him and why Spain are among the favourites for the competition.

Viva Espanã!

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Due to my love for all things sun, sea and sangria, it was no surprise to discover that my perfect surrogate country to adopt for this year’s European Championships is Spain. And this time, even after all those prior disappointing competitions, I don’t think it’s a rooky mistake what with the delights of Fernando Torres made all the more promising by his international partnership with Villa.

Striker David Villa is set to leave his club Valencia this summer with Read Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham all linked with the diminutive star. This week Cesc Fabregas has urged the Gunners to sign his Spanish compatriot who may be the perfect foil for the Togolese man-mountain Emmanuel Adebayor. His arrival would be a massive statement of Arsenal’s intent for next season and the fact Villa has stated his desire to play for the Gunners surely gives them a major chance. However, whether Arsene Wenger would shell out the required transfer fee remains debatable especially if Chelsea enter the hunt and push the price tag up further.
