Fulham v Manchester United: The Title Race Really Heats Up as United Make Up More Ground?

It almost says it all when a preview starts “Fulham have only produced 10 victory in this fixture’s 55 match history.” The most recent of those actually comes earlier than you’ll think; just back in October 2003 when the Cottagers produced an impressive 3-1 win at Old Trafford to finish just six places behind the Red Devils.

Back to reality and Roy Hodgson’s world paints little resemblance to that occasion. Lying in 19th, defeats to West Ham and Middlesbrough means the Cottagers are gradually falling behind the survival pack who are now four points clear. And luck doesn’t seem to be paying them a visit anytime soon.

A Costly Error in Judgement?

Hodgson was left fuming when Nolberto Solano’s 87-minute was allowed by referee Howard Webb proving things tend to not go in your favour when times are hard. And they don’t get much harder than a visit from the reigning champions.

Fulham have not earned a point in this tie for nearly 4 years; every one of the last six encounters have seen all the goods going to United and comfortably at that. Scorelines including a 5-1 and 4-2 from the prior two seasons suggest this tie presents a platform for the United players to showcase their skills, a stage I’m sure Ronaldo, Rooney and co will happily perform on.

Psychological Edge

After making up some ground on league leaders Arsenal, United’s Darren Fletcher has claimed the club has gained a ‘psychological edge’ over their title rivals. His suggestions cannot be underestimated either especially as the Reds attacking unit is looking almost invincible and now has the added bonus of a fully fit again Louis Saha. Against this vulnerable back line - one that has leaked 45 goals and counting so far this season - I can only see Fulham’s bid for survival dealt another, possible fatal, blow.

Pundit’s Pick: One more nail in Fulham’s Premiership coffin (away win)
