Did Cahill Take his Goal Celebration Too Far?
Liverpool momentarily saw 4th place following their 3-1 win at the Reebok but it literally was just a matter of hours before their local rivals Everton were back on top. The Yak opened and closed the scoring with a goal from Tiny Tim inbetween. But it was Cahill’s goal celebration that generated most of the speculation.
After scoring his goal, the Australian placed one wrist over the other as if they were in handcuffs adopting an arresting pose. He later explained it was for his older brother; Sean Cahill is currently serving a 6-year jail sentence after being found guilty of causing grievious bodily harm after an attack that left it’s victim partially blind.
Cahill said, “That was for my older brother because I am just proud that he is happy and I am happy. I just wanted to send a message to him. It has been emotional for me because my family mean so much to me.”
Touching yes, but should a football match really be the setting for celebrating such an incident? Look at Cahill’s fellow team mate Andy Johnson and his ‘mysterious’ A sign celebration. This caused much speculation and has since been explained as promoting a campaign to help get kids off the streets - clearly a very worthy cause to promote.
So was Cahill’s salute just an act of ‘brotherly solitude’ or does his celebration border on the verge of tasteless?
