Diomansy Finally Does the Business for Fulham!

Saturday lunch-time saw arguably the most explosive match of the 2007/08 Premier League season as Chelsea went level with leaders United in the title race. The 31% that backed the Red Devils to end the Blues 80 home League unbeaten run would have been disappointed with the team Sir Alex chose. After stating his desire to win the trophy by winning at the Bridge, Fergie put out a relatively negative side with Carlos Tevez, Patrice Evra and Cristiano Ronaldo not in the starting line-up. Chelsea were without Frank Lampard but his ready-made replacement Michael Ballack stepped up to the plate to score both goals including a penalty 4 minutes from time. Was it a penalty? Well, I am sure the 43% that backed a draw wouldn’t have thought so. C’est la vie, the Blues won, various post-match incidents occurred and 26 % of you were chuffed with the result.

An under strength Liverpool side travelled to relegation threatened Birmingham this weekend. Despite the Reds having one eye on their Champions League semi-final 2nd leg at Stamford Bridge, 67% of you still backed Rafa’s boys to win. The Blues raced into a 2-goal lead which would have pleased 12% of you but Liverpool stormed back with 2 goals in 13 minutes from fringe players Peter Crouch and Yossi Benayoun. With 14 minutes to play a winner was up for grabs but in the end both sides had to settle for a point. The home side needed more in their current predicament but at least 21% were happy with the result!

The award to most shocking result of the weekend goes to Fulham for their 3-2 win at Eastlands after being two goals down. The Cottagers hadn’t won away for 19 months until recently then like buses, 2 come in a row! Three goals in the last 20 minutes turned a likely home win (backed by 84%) into a shock away victory (backed by 4%). Spare a thought for the 12% of Premier 10 players that backed the draw but were denied by Diomansy Kamara’s injury-time winner, who ever doubted he was worth £6million?

The Black Cats won the Tees-Wear Derby at the Stadium of Light through yet another last gasp home goal. This time it was Daryl Murphy who won the points and drew the plaudits. Though it left the 36% of you that backed a draw fuming. However, 46% backed Roy Keane’s side to win and establish their top flight status for a further season. See you next season Black Cats!

Oops they did it again, yes the looking forward to the Summer holidays Spurs once again drew against one of the struggling sides. Tottenham have now drawn the last 4 games 1-1 despite playing the likes of Blackburn, Boro, Wigan and now Bolton. Those 16% who followed Spurs poor recent form and predicted a draw would have been pleased yet the 77% who backed the home side would have been left exasperated by Dimitar Berbatov’s last-minute headed miss, is he worth over £30million? Not on this form he isn’t!

West Ham and Newcastle shared a 4-goal thriller at Upton Park with those 22% who backed the home side looking home and dry once the Hammers went 2-goals ahead after 23 minutes. However, the Magpies weren’t unbeaten in 6 games for nothing and they duly scored 2 goals themselves in just 3 minutes. Surprisingly neither side could claim a second-half winner so the 31% that predicted the draw did well.

There was a 0-0 bore draw at the JJB Stadium this weekend as Wigan and Reading shared a point. The Latics are now a win away from Premier League survival whilst Reading are teetering on the edge of the drop zone. The majority 67% of you backed Steve Bruce ‘s team to keep their superb home run going but it was the 22% that backed the draw that triumphed.

Blackburn kept up their impressive record at Fratton Park with a 1-0 win courtesy of Roque Santa Cruz who has now scored 6 goals in his last 7 games. Portsmouth were without their PFA goalkeeper of the year David James and Rovers winner 16 minutes from time only pleased 14% of you. However, Blackburn’s record of 1 defeat in 12 matches at Fratton Park is not to be sniffed at.

The race for 5th place is still hanging in the balance as Everton and Villa fought out a 2-2 draw at Goodison. The 38% that backed the home side to return to winning ways would have been disappointed that they couldn’t hold their lead despite going ahead twice. After Villa’s recent run of form a high percentage of you went for a Villans win (27%) however 3 goals in the last 10 minutes led to a draw and only 35% could afford to smile about it.

The rock bottom Rams against arguably the most attacking side in the Premier League. Didn’t take a rocket scientist to work out who was going to win as 97% pointed out. However, yet another thrashing means Derby are going down in style, an incredibly embarrassing style! Emmanuel Adebayor grabbed a hat-trick to take his recent tally to 7 goals in 6 games, shame he couldn’t do it went it mattered.

So the title race, the Uefa Cup qualification race and relegation battle are all going to the wire. As 4 of the bottom 5 Premier League teams picked up points this weekend, Premier 10 players may have to start adjusting their predictions according to the predicament of the side involved. However, luckily for us Derby remain the most predictable side in the Premier League. Good luck for next week!
