Tottenham the Capital Cup Kings: Will London Clubs Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham & Fulham Win Silverware Next Season?
Since the Premier League began for the 1992/93 season at least one London club has managed to win one of the major honours in all but 3 of the last 16 seasons. However, this season it wasn’t the usual suspects Arsenal or Chelsea celebrating cup or title glory it was Juande Ramos’ Tottenham who finally ended a 9-year trophy-less period with Carling Cup success. Now Manchester United have secured an impressive double it remains to be seen whether clubs from the capital can compete for silverware next season. This begs the question: which of the London clubs do you think have the best chance of winning major honours next season?
Blues Blow it
Chelsea narrowly missed out 3 different trophies after losing in both the Champions League and Carling Cup finals as well as finishing a close 2nd to United in the Premier League. However, a season without trophies could spell the end of Avram Grant’s tenure at the Bridge. When you add that a number of established Blues stars are reportedly looking to move on (Drogba and Carvalho allegedly), then it may difficult for a new-look Chelsea side to get amongst the silverware next season too.
Gunners Firing Blanks
The Gunners have now gone 3 seasons without silverware despite leading the division for much of the campaign as well as reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the semi-finals of the Carling Cup. Arsene Wenger will need to rebuild the squad’s confidence after their late collapse as well as replace those players that want to leave the Emirates. Midfield revelation Mathieu Flamini has already departed for Italy and Alexander Hleb reportedly wants to follow. However, if Wenger can sign the likes of his targeted young compatriots Hatem Ben Arfa and Samir Nasri then the Gunners will remain in the mix for trophies though domestic cup success looks their best chance of silverware.
Tottenham to Build on Cup Success?
Spurs are once again a team in transition, a relatively new manager, a number of players expected to leave with plenty of new arrivals sure to come to the Lane this summer. If it wasn’t for the Carling Cup triumph then the 2007/08 season can only be viewed as a major disappointment. It remains to be seen whether Tottenham can improve enough to compete for a top 4 place after finishing a lowly 11th.
However, there is no doubting the clubs ambition as the signing of Luka Modric illustrated perfectly. The Dimitar Berbatov will he or won’t he stay saga is continuing to run and until that it sorted out one way or another it’s difficult to see the club moving forward. Despite this, Spurs remain the only London club to actually win something this season and in Juande Ramos they possess a cup-specialist for a manager so write them off at your peril.
Hammers Hit & Miss Whilst Cottagers Cannot Compete for Cups
The other top division London sides came nowhere near winning a trophy as Fulham struggled to survive the drop but are sure to come back stronger next season. West Ham remained marooned in 10th place limbo for much of the season as injuries halted their climb up the table. If Alan Curbishley can keep hold of the likes of Dean Ashton and Rob Green whilst nursing his many injury-prone stars back to fitness, the Hammers should begin to climb the table. However, with reports that the club are looking to cut their high wage bill it’s debatable what exactly is going to happen at Upton Park over the summer.
So which of these London clubs do you expect to win major honours next season and which will continue to struggle? Let’s hear your views.

I expect Spurs to push on and to win more next season under Juande, Arsenal and CHelsea are on the slide. West Ham and Fulham….should they be even in this poll? lol
May 22nd, 2008 at 14:30
I would make Chelsea favourites closely followed by ARSEanal, then Tottenham.
The other two don’t have ANY chance of winning silverware next season in my opinion.
Infact, they don’t even have 5 trophies between them over the course of their history do they?
I would not even include West Ham or Fulham in this to be honest. So they are London clubs, then again so are Brentford and they stand as much chance of winning a major domestic trophy next season as West Ham and Fulham!!!!
May 22nd, 2008 at 14:35
Spurs fan here, We were lucky to get the cup. But do not write anyone off, look at the semi finals of the FA cup. The english league is just getting better and better.
May 22nd, 2008 at 14:38

May 22nd, 2008 at 14:40
Dont matter about silverware when u have got support like ours! Well done you won the carling cup, pat yourself on the back for that for beating arsenal’s under 15s 5-1! Was gna call you glory hunters but then again you win about as much as we do! WE WON THE WOLD CUP! See you at the lane u spuds!
May 22nd, 2008 at 14:41
yeah spurs to push on like they did this season be lucky if they get out of bottom half or are they gonna break into the top four ha ha ha !
May 22nd, 2008 at 14:44
Three seasons ago we were in the final of the FA Cup which is the closest any London club has come to winning it recently with the exception of Chelsea. There is no need for Spurs fans to come on here giving it the biggun because they won the mickey mouse cup. Look at the table, you finished 11th, behind a team that had over 50 injuries over the course of the season. Congratulations on money well spent. No wonder no-one likes Spurs.
Jon, West Ham fan
May 22nd, 2008 at 14:46
Spurs Capital Kings..Pah: If Arsenal had had Spurs’s points tally it would’ve been our worst since 1912/13 (if you recalculate 3 points for a win). As much as it pains me; Chelski were top London club; being only a couple of results away from winning the league and a slipped pen from the champions league. And we Gooners wouldn’t swap champions league qualification for that mickey-mouse reserve cup.
May 22nd, 2008 at 14:49
Arsenal one the Amsterdam cup and the Arsenal cup which we took more seriously than the Carling cup, every 9 years to lose once to you in the carlin cup. I’ll take that you mugs.
What do we think of totnum?
May 22nd, 2008 at 14:51
you yids don’t have a chance in hell of winning everything your pathetic and a\ waste of breath! an example of how ridiculous you are(well 2) you released a dvd of beating west ham in a standard league game and another for beating arsenal… how pathetic!!!! Hammers will secure europe next year and yids will be about 10th.
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:00
How can anyone say that Spurs fans are deluded after reading this wonderful tale of the triumphant Tottenham side. Big congratulations to MK Dons for winning the Johnsons Paint Trophy too.
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:01
Oh my god . Spurs fans have not come on here bigging themselves up. I think it is more consistant to say your spammers are on here slaggin us off as you have nothing good to say about your team? Wow you finished above spurs, you had a good season, we had a terrible one!
anyway i saw alot of teams fighing to win the ‘worthless’ cup that got us into eurpoe again. Are hammers in there?
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:07
Well done YidYank - another Spurs fan with their head up their own A*** and knows nothing about football…….all the same and they’ll never change. I even heard a Spurs fan on the train the other day slating Chelsea for their season…….Hello? Now I’m far from being a Chelsea fan but open your eyes - Just pipped by the best team in the land in the Premiership and the Champs League, whilst a team that finished 11th in the league keeps saying how good they are ‘going’ to be……….now didn’t we all hear that at the start of last season? Even West Ham finished higher with all their injuries - Spurs fans, what a joke! West Ham to finish in the top 6 next season………..and above Spurs - AGAIN! Read the table and weep Yids!
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:17
Not sure why people are saying Arsenal are on the slide? A young team that improved 15 points on the previous league campaign and who were unlucky not to advance to the semis in the CL. All this after spending very little in the transfer market and selling their all time leading scorer and captain. If they fail to bolster their squad and also replace key players who leave prior to the window closing this might be a fair statement, but based on the results of this year compared to the previous I am not sure how it can be said they are regressing.
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:19
Winning the Carling Cup (1st trophy in 9 years) does not make THFC the cup kings of London! as for overtaking AFC next season it will require more than just bettering us it will require SEVEN other clubs to lie down roll over and let THFC into the top half of the table! where is the sense in touting THFC for a top 4 spot when they can’t even make the top 10 (and their record under JR was no better than under MJ).
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:19
and we are deluded?? top 6 West Ham? don’t make me laugh you have a team of crocks, a manager you all hate and a chairman who wants to cut the wage bill…yep the future is bright for you lot lol
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:21
lol..you have to laugh at the spammers and the gooners. There are only two proper clubs in London, unfortunately one lost the CL final last night. As for Spurs finsihing fourth I have yet to meet one fan who thinks they will realistically challenge fourth place. They all know they won’t but one thing is for sure they will make more of a push than the sorry mob from the Boleyn. What an insidious bunch of toads they are, potless bunch of tossers,as for the goons what hasn’t been said about them isn’t worth repeating.Hey you’re all happy finishing 3rd again eh??? and again!!!
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:26
Go on gooner boy’s spout your font of wisdom or as i like to call it perpetuate this rubbish that Spurs fans think they will finish fourth. Not one does, yet those that do are the sad pikeys from Boleyn and the equally sad gypos from the immigrants gives you lot something to talk about doesn’t it?..As not much ever happens at your tawdry clubs.Wet spam beating the arse in 1980 sometime ago wasn’t it boy’s?…
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:38
hahahah
All this spurs bashing from West Ham Mugs who’ve won nothing sisnce Trevor Brooking fell onto a ball 28 years ago. Always complaining about injuries, BUY STRONGER PLAYERS apart from mugs that you have to pay over the odds so they’ll come to your club.
All the stupid Goons who “don’t take the carling Cup Seriously” Sanga, Gallas, Hleb, Fabregas, Adebayor, Bentdner, Eduardo, Gilberto, Diaby, Walcott, most of your 1st team on the pitch when you got spanked, so leave the u15 jokes because you just mug yourselves off
Chelsea unlucky in the C/L but your fans were piss poor at Wembley, all of you were so sure you were gonna win that when you wen’t behind you couldn’t even support your club and sing to gee the players up.
5 mins to go and half the stadium was empty. Too many Johnny come lately fans who know nothing.
West Ham, Gooners and Chelsea fans, what a bunch of losers
Spurs, best fans in London by a mile
C.O.Y.S
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:39
Millwall fan here i think I will take the lead from the bandit ammer and say we were also in the FA cup final not long ago too.Does that include us too?..anything to be taken seriously you deluded hammers.Stick to what you know,or do you want us to come down and put you in your place yet again?..lol…
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:50
anyone realised that arsenal aint no longer a football club. its a brand to be worn like nike and adidas. pathetic if you ask me…not to mention they don’t even have one english player representing them on the field regularly. arsenal should be playing in france.
May 22nd, 2008 at 15:57
not to mention their support consists entirely of immigrants who know nothing about english football. Oh yeah and of course that pseudo gangsta mug kanu played for them. Geez I like pompey but that sadact was one buy too far.
May 22nd, 2008 at 16:34
Yidyank you are a total plum. Was it 33 points or 34 behind the regressing Arsenal. You finished below West Ham, you won a bothered cup. Champions league next season? err no.
Now if any of you Spuds are honest, would you rather take 6 points from us in the league and finish 3rd next season, or win a cup with three handles that no big club takes seriously. Nuff Said.
FOYS
May 22nd, 2008 at 16:45
I am a west ham boy and i gotta say just one thinga and it aint about the arsenal and chelsea supporters. its about those tottenham. listen up. congrats on winning the mikey mouse cup very impressive for a season u were tipped to break the top 4 and u finish 11th. seriously with the talent u got and where u finished no wonder berbatov wants to leave. i think he can see ur a club on the slide. another few season like the one u just had and u will probably be playing in the championship. west ham had half there players out for most of the season and we still managed to be man u once and liverpool once. u r a disgrace of a london side. one last thing to the millwall supporter. hows league one going
west ham til i die
May 22nd, 2008 at 16:56
All spurs fans appreciate that where we are aiming for is going to take some hard work, clever purchases and continued commitment to the club from loyal fans who know what it’s like to support a truly english football team (unlike the fake north londoners) someone please remind arsenal their roots are south of the river, although you’re looking more and more like a French-speaking African team lately, maybe the African cup of nations is better suited than the premier league. Anyhow, we had a bad season, change of managers and we still picked up a trophy (more than can be said for arsenal or west ham) oh and this mickey mouse cup business, atleast we won something (gooners…). And we’re in europe (spammers…). Aside from that we showed we could compete with the top teams in england/the world (arsenal and chelsea both fielded much stronger teams than they would like to admit. Still thats the arrogance both sets of fans ooze these days, not being able to admit when you’re beaten fair and square. Typical) spurs are still some way off champions league I don’t deny that, but we have a fantastic manager who is building on what we have and we will only move forward. Oh, and I seem to remember the last two seasons Champions League were not dirty words when put in the same sentence as spurs. we’ll regain that consistency in the next 2 seasons without a doubt, then the real attack begins. COYS
May 22nd, 2008 at 17:33
Ahhhhh didums - poor little spurs fans can’t take a bit a criticism from a team that finished above them?…………well, you better get used to it ‘cos there’s quite a few others! Including a West Ham team with loads of injuries! How embarrassing! Lol
May 22nd, 2008 at 17:35
Rosy, did you sniff when you finished making that comment?..you know a little glint of satisfaction,a smug grin.In your otherwise mundaqne life?..Get a grip rosy, you talk crap like most goons, two teams in London your lot are just foreign mugs pretending..It’s funny though so if you lot of saddos had reached the Carling final would you not have been “bothered” then?.You are a hypocrite and a bonehead,if you lot aren’t bothered by it, then your mob are going to have a gloriously empty trophy room in years to come..COYS!!!..
May 22nd, 2008 at 17:38
What have i told you boleyn boy’s about speaking when you are talked to.Spurs are not bothered by your infantile fans never were and never have been.It bothers you so much that they don’t care,as i said are we going to have to get the Millwall boy’s to teach you your place again?.Up the Lions….
May 22nd, 2008 at 17:48
hey you happy hammers, spanked by the yids 4-0 in your cup final and buying a load of aged mercenaries,a manager that has no plan b,if he has a plan A which is debateable, and you think you are on the up????..oh to be a happy hammer stuck in no man’s land, not won a trophy since player’s had sideburns and when Motson was good.hey but you’re on the up though aren’t you?…
May 22nd, 2008 at 17:52
Nice to see the sham that is West Ham get a good hiding on here.As we have said for years at the Den,west ham are just little toy’s to have fun with, and nobody takes them seriously.least of all the Yids it seems,it really hurts you when they ignore you don’t it?..They just don’t rate you boy’s, thing is no one should…
May 22nd, 2008 at 18:39
Deluded and not a lasagne in sight…sad article topped off by delusions of grandeur. Don’t matter what you totts or your millwall back up elf says, the facts are you couldnt finish above us and we were riddled with injuries. You can talk all day about your cup and the 4 nil and so on, but fact is where did you finish. The way you lot ranted on about going in leaps and bounds last season, anyone would have thought you were clowns on stilts.
May 22nd, 2008 at 18:45
hey lose the mad dog act baby boy,we all know what the spammers are like..bet you wish your lot won a trophy in your lifetime though eh?…like them yids.
May 22nd, 2008 at 18:51
The thing is the yids “can talk all day about stuff” 4-0 and the cup as you said, the simple reason is they achieved little man, what did your pony lot do?…tell me,finish above the yids…..yipppeeeeeee…hey can you tell your grandchildren you were there the time you finished above the yids..he must be so proud…
May 22nd, 2008 at 20:35

May 22nd, 2008 at 20:43
Just like the muppet spammers, repeating the same old trash pretending you’re a big club,is your son proud of you then?..”yes son I was there when we finished above the Yids,I tell you lad I get misty eyed when i think about it” dream on,deluded spanners, see no one takes you seriously because you go on about finishing tenth, tell me who cares, sign of a small outfit bragging about finishing tenth?…how’s your trophy cabinet??..lol
May 22nd, 2008 at 20:47

May 22nd, 2008 at 21:01
Why are u west ham on about finishing above spurs in the league. You had nothing to shout about all season while i was at wembley celebrating a cup victory 4 spurs againts probably the best team in london chelsea.that means we are in europe your not.look at the history books u mugs more trophies 4 spurs hands down . west ham are a yo yo club who havent won a major trophie since 1980. no wonder your forever blowing bubbles.COYS
May 22nd, 2008 at 23:12
Muppet spanners have run out of things to say…”but we finished above the yids though and we had lots of injuries too, didn’t we dad”?…let’s all laugh at the hammer house of horrors…
May 23rd, 2008 at 02:33

May 23rd, 2008 at 04:51
ok ppl behave. we all know tottenham supporters are a bunch of losers. let them go on about there mickey mouse cup and there 4 nil win. who cares. they think they had a bad season because they had a manager change. we spent our entire season without a full strength side while u had all ur start players playing for u and we still finished above u. i know it aint a big thing finishing above tottenham because really they aren’t a big club. a todler could have done a better job managing u guys. stick to what u do best, cheering for ur pathetic team at mickey mouse tournaments.
May 23rd, 2008 at 10:18
Call the cup what you like, i’d rather a trophy in the cabinet and finish eleventh than just simply tenth. You must really rate our club.
May 23rd, 2008 at 10:21
Woolwich Numpty _ Steed Malbraque Useless Kaboul, Chimbonda, Taarabt, Dervite and Ekotto. Not very french are they Bonehead! add to this Zokora (French ex colony and french speaking and you have a similar sized French contigent to us. The fact that your frenchies are rubbish and ours are good is irrelevant.
As for the Carling cup, we played the kids in the final against CHelsea
This is why you can’t discuss football with Spuds, no cogent arguments.

May 23rd, 2008 at 16:24
I had a bet with a mate how long it would be before you brought my mum into it to see if you can try and get my back up, but sadly you fail again. The reason you fail is because i find you highly stupid. Hard to be victimised by lower league waffle and delusions of grandeur. But be my guest keep trying, you’re so easy to wind up
May 23rd, 2008 at 16:57
Well you sad lot i’m off, but before I go just want to say that, this wind up started yesterday and i had a 20 quid bet with my mate that i could get you plums wound up for a couple of days, and let you think i’m a west ham fan, which in reality i’m not. I support man utd, but i have had great fun, and i owe it all to my mate who is a hammers fan, for laughing at this article and the deluded tripe you splattered on here. No use replying, i wont be on here to read it which will get up your long noses even more. I’m off to get me and my mate some drinks out of the money I won in this bet.Spurs for top four? LOL. Cheerio doughnuts
May 23rd, 2008 at 17:04
Does the boy have any idea that joke is solely on him and anyone that come out with so much heated nonsense really has a big problem. As for the dough he was supposed to be getting no more than a kid teling porkies in the playground, deluded as someone said..as for manure that makes sense, support welll he buys the merchandise, has no idea where slaford is though
May 23rd, 2008 at 17:07
I could tell he knew nothing about football, you could tell he kept repeating stuff back.No logic no knowledge.Good to see he was upset at the end though.furious he was and what a numbskull…
May 23rd, 2008 at 17:12
Even as a hammers fan i can tell all that was rubbish,as for the twenty quid more like a bag of marbles, from the playground, what a child…
May 24th, 2008 at 12:11
I don’t understand all the snide remarks about my team (West Ham, of course) on here, especially the ones from Chelski fans. We were a bigger club than you’s lot for some time (what was it, just ONE FA Cup win for Chelski before ‘97) before your upturn in fortunes over the past decade, funded mainly by a Russian crook. And in any case, West Ham reached one Cup final every two years on average from the mid-60s to the early 80s. Maybe I’m over-optimistic but I’m convinced that West Ham will return to the days when we were a decent Cup-side sooner rather than later.
May 24th, 2008 at 16:19
Well if you read the posts from people purporting to be hammers fans then you would understand.Chelsea have always had the glamour way back in the early 70’s and play in a prime location, the fact they have a rich benefactor is beneficial to them.Who wouldn’t want that money??.They play in a great location in one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world and have always been a big club whether people admit this or not.Abramovich’s money has allowed them to compete on a much higher level that is all.It just smacks of jealousy that every one comments on Abramovich’s money, would they be saying the same if they had bought their club?.probably not.I am not sure that West Ham were a bigger club than Chelsea pre 1997,I would say more or less on a par and both yo yo teams, your highest ever league position was 3rd if i remember correctly under john Lyall. So I would argue that Chelsea and West Ham were roughly the same, until Abramovich came in.if he had bought West ham and used them as his “plaything” would you have cried foul?,and resented being called a “plastic hammer”??.
May 24th, 2008 at 17:58
I agree with most of what you’re saying ‘David Webb’ in that Chelski have always been labelled a “glamour club”. Many celebraties used to watch them play in the 60s and 70s. However, before the likes of Zola, Vialli, Gullit and even more recent-day super-stars arrived at Stamford Bridge; you’ve got to admit that West Ham in the 60s, 70s and 80s had the more famous players and for me, had a higher standing in the game? Not by a huge margin, but nevertheless we had the edge. I mean look at our list of famous players we had:- Moore, Hurst, Peters, “Budgie” Byrne, Dear, Brooking, Cottee, Devonshire and of course our brilliant and much underrated general Billy Bonds… This is some list of talent, and most of these players stayed loyal to West Ham for the majority (if not all) their careers. It’s incredible how we didn’t win more with those players at our disposal. I don’t think Chelski can list such famous ex-greats but give it a go if you want for all I care.
May 25th, 2008 at 11:02
I’m sure we all know that Berbatov is waiting to see who comes in under the radar at Spurs but if Spurs can work to bring in Fred from OL and use this to tempt Gomez from PSV along with Capel from the managers old team then the makings of a truly great team is well under way. In addition to the stars mentioned above Spurs will also need to try and bring in a world class midfield player with the eye for a killer pass and the strength to command the centre of the pitch. Tottenham already have a world class leftback in the making with Gareth Bale and once he’s fit the combination of Hutton, Woodgate, King and Bale in front of Gomez would be almost impregnable and totaly creative going forward.
May 25th, 2008 at 11:07
Robbie Keane footballing legend, consumate professional and the present-day heartbeat of Tottenham Hotspur. All ye who wish to be great footballers follow his example.
