Which Premier League Club Will Most Improve Next Season? Will it be Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Man City, Man United, Chelsea, Sunderland, Newcastle, Villa, Portsmouth, Wigan, Everton, Fulham, Blackburn, Middlesbrough, West Ham or Bolton?
In just over 6 weeks to 2008/09 Premier League season will kick off with fans up and down their country hopeful their side can improve on last season’s performances.
A number of clubs have been busy in the transfer market already with a number of potential deals expected in the upcoming weeks. These signings could well determine the improvements clubs make on their last campaign. One team that will be expected to improve on last seasons 11th placed finish is big spending Tottenham who’ve already signed Luka Modric and Giovani Dos Santos with many more new arrivals expected.
Arsenal’s youngsters should improve after another year’s experience and will aim to push Manchester United and Chelsea all the way to the title this time. However, will the potential sales of Alexander Hleb and Emmanuel Adebayor set back this exciting crop of youngsters?
Can Liverpool improve on their disappointing 4th placed finish with the expected arrival of Gareth Barry coupled with their 2 new full-backs?
Will North-East clubs Sunderland, Newcastle and Boro sign the right players to lift them out of the bottom half of the table? Also will last seasons strugglers Bolton and Fulham sign the right players to shoot them up the table with Swedish star Johan Elmander rumoured to be on his way?
Do you believe new Premier League managers Luiz Felipe Scolari and Paul Ince can build on their new clubs performances last season or will they struggle?
Finally, few would believe Manchester United could improve on last season’s Champions League and Premier League double but can they win their 3rd title in a row in amore convincing style than they did on the last game of the last season?
Vote on who you believe will be the team to improve most next season and let’s hear your views why.

It will obviously be Spurs, big signings, big manager, dead wood trimmed, we will be competing for top 4 and nowhere near midtable!
June 27th, 2008 at 11:43
Itll be spurs mainly because we couldnt get much worse. We will improve but simply because we wont be as shocking, fifth or sixth will be reaslistic
June 27th, 2008 at 11:47
Haha. Is this going to be the spuds year? Finally going to break into the top four?
Then you wake up.
June 27th, 2008 at 11:49
I also think it will be Spurs but not because of the reasons Yidstar has listed. Basically Spurs greatly under achieved last year so you’d expect them to be pushing back for at least 5th spot. Not sure the top 4 will be broken into yet though. It may take another couple of years of building and gelling teams together. That applies to all the hopefulls, Spurs, Villa, Everton and the likes of.
June 27th, 2008 at 11:50
Not Spurs, they say/do the same thing each year……so I go for Sunderland, Keane building on last years experience.
June 27th, 2008 at 11:51
Roughly 3 more players and Spurs will be flying next season..
Not sure how long and how well the new players will gel in the side… but when they do the only way is UPPPPPPPP for the mighty Yids!!!!
June 27th, 2008 at 11:55
realisticly with the signings spurs have made they should be at least 5th or 6th, but then again at the beginning of last season they were meant to crack the top four. i look foward to seeing west ham with a fit squad and i think everton will have another good season
June 27th, 2008 at 11:56
Oh not Tottenham,4th place,Hotspur! so what’s it gonna be this year, maybe you’ll go for top 8 seeing as what happened last year you don’t what to repeat that!
But knowing what fools you lot are you’re probably gonna start the whole top 4 story all over again ,until we come to the lane and show you guys how football is played.
June 27th, 2008 at 11:57
Spurs are signing excellent players but in the wrong areas, without fit and good defenders another 5th place finish if best.
They will just get pushed around again. High mid table again.
June 27th, 2008 at 11:57
Im a spurs fan but im worried about all the hype. It happened last year and the team just expected to waltz into the top 4 but we completely flopped. Obviously the signings and money spent is going to have a positive effect on the team but we cant just expect them to automatically result in becoming a top 4 side…
June 27th, 2008 at 11:58
Spurs are the only ones who have done much so far with more to come, so even a gooner could figure out we will be the most improved. 11th. was a blimp on the screen made acceptable by silverware (that’s a trophy you get when you win something gooners), and the fact that our resident genius of a manager will have a full year this go around. I can see Spurs finishing 3rd. and gooners and scousers battling for 4th.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:00
The not so might yids will be the team to improve the most, should think so aswell after spending £27m before the wheelings and dealings have even got under way! Cant see them breaking into the top 4 though. My guess is that spurs will finish 5th with everton 6th and villa 7th.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:02
Sunderland to make the biggest improvement for me. Oh, i’ve just had Deja vous must be all those Spurs fans, weren’t you all saying a top 4 finish this time last season. Didn’t really materialise did it. Well done for the cup run tho. CTID
June 27th, 2008 at 12:02
It would have to be Spurs, simply because they had such a terrible season.
At the start of the Summer I was very confident of Everton going on to break the top 4 next season but it would seem the board have left us short yet again.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:03
i have not seen any ‘were gonna finish 4th’ talk this season - all these paranoid gunners!!!! we wont finish top 4 but i do think top 6 and i would be happy with this and a cup final - lets be realistic!!! anyway by 2010 when all these clibs in debt are banned from the CL we will get in by default - works for me….. thank you mr platini! spammers are deluded - even when fit your squad is average and you have bought injury prone players - bowyer, dyer, bellamy, etc. Villa are the ones to watch!! not spammers!
June 27th, 2008 at 12:04
yeah I agree with Yidstar Spurs will definitely improve because they have such a great team and manger and all those amazing world class players and all that fantastic English talent. Last season was a blip and all the seasons before it actaully all of spurs recent history was a blip they will definitely break into the top 4 of not only England but Europe too. I mean how could Spurs not finish 1st or 2nd in the Leauge. Because this time last year they were supposed to be in the top four so this year surely thye should be top two. Oh what Berbatov is going to leave? But they bought Bent last year and dumped Defoe so they must know what they are doing. Don’t they?
Oh sh**t just because you say it and dream it and spend money it doesn’t happen. Damn lets hope Spurs don’t embarrass themselves further. Maybe instead of making predictions of how good they are going to be and where they are going to finish maybe we should just judge them on their league table position because that does not lie.
Stop pretending Spurs you’re only going to let yourselves down and no one else cares.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:05
Spurs ain’t got a clue. Jol took them as far as they can and will go. All they sign are glory boys with a couple of exceptions. Everton Villa are the teams that will be fighting for fifth spot without a doubt.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:06
Man Utd
June 27th, 2008 at 12:07
bent is going to score 3 goals against you filthy goonfaces
June 27th, 2008 at 12:08
I’d look at NUFC moving steadily forward, probably into the top half of the table but certainly NOT a european contender this year. SAFC to cement their place in mid to lower table this season BUT I can see Keane being hijacked by Celtic at the end of next season. Spurs/Everton - more of the same next season, hard to beat (except spurs at St James’) and out of the two, spurs to push on more than Everton but expectation may be their downfall. Villa to threaten but slide away again.
And just for good measure, Stoke to be relegated.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:09
Spurs will go up three places to 8th
June 27th, 2008 at 12:09
It won’t be Bolton
June 27th, 2008 at 12:11
Sounds like a echo from last year with all the yids.
You cannot just buy success because you have a few quid unless you have the skill of Kenny Dalglish and Jack Walker.
Look how many clubs have tried and failed over the years, Newcastle, Leeds, Spurs, Villa (good last season for first time), Birmingham.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:12
Not to forget man city , how much did they spend last season?
June 27th, 2008 at 12:15
I support spurs and after last years terrible league placing i certainly won’t be hyping anything up this year….even with the new signings. I wish every other spurs fan would do the same and just sit quietly and let the new season do the talking. We still need 2/3 top signings before we can even mention the “top four”. If we can get Bentley plus a top DM and CB then we can have a crack at 5th and anything more is a bonus.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:16
Everybody is naming Spurs as the team that will improve the most next season, but who say’s spending money can gain you success?
I know Chelsea have done it with Abromavich’s backing but teams like Blackburn and Arsenal have shown how well you can do with just youth in the squad.
I see Tottenham failing to provide what they should with the amount of money they are spending. Starting with Luka Modric, he will be a big flop for spurs.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:20
Luka Modric a big flop next season? Our main problem was our midfield last season..or lack of…end of story. He can only be an improvement over the dross we had.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:21
HOWAY THE TOON!!!!!
Modric will be a flop???? thats why newcastle were crying when he chose Spurs!!!
and every commentator on TV saying how good the player looks!!
Stop hating and justify your comments.
As i said above top 5 finish for Spurs but if we can sign 3 more classy players then no reason why we cant push on for top 4!
June 27th, 2008 at 12:22
Roversok - u haven’t a clue! Villa all the way!
June 27th, 2008 at 12:22
Howay the toon - even though I agree with most of your sentiments regarding spurs, last season they took their foot off the gas towards the end of the season once a cup was won and they had gained european football for this season - Ramos won’t allow that to happen this season (the taking the foot off the gas bit).
As an NUFC fan, I can’t help but be amused by a lot of their fans’ predictions but as fgjhfj says, it’d be better if a lot of them kept quiet and let the club get on with it. For all the spurs’ fans slating of NUFC, we have a lot of parallels regarding the clubs. Both serious underachievers for years!
I still stand by my first post.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:23
Villa have hardley spent anything. Just cause we have a rich owner dosn’t mean we have spent loads. Look it up
June 27th, 2008 at 12:26
I think jackrussel has been sniffing some funny air in the Northeast, Spurs have got an excellent chance of ousting both Arsenal and Liverpool in Modric they have potentially the best playmaker in the premierleague and Dos Santos could be our answer to Ronaldo - this guy is special!. Now they have just signed Gomas (brazils goalkeeper) who kept over 50% clean sheets last season. In woodgate and King if not there is not a better centre pairing in the premierleague and with Gareth Bale back and the team most likely to get Bently tell me who is better equiped
June 27th, 2008 at 12:27
I genuinely believe that Spurs will be challenging for the Premiership title this year. Add this summer’s list of signings to the excellent acquisitions they made last year and the team will be flying, it may take a match or two for the team to gel, but that certainly didn’t hinder Manchester City at the start of last season.
This is the year that Spurs will finally come good. As for Arsenal, they shot their bolt this year and players are leaving like rats fleeing a sinking ship. The Carling Cup match last season gave a much truer representation of their relative positions than the League table, which was an aberration totally attributable to Martin Jol.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Arsenal drop out of the top five this year, with Spurs certain to be up there with Man U and the Chavs.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:27
He most probably will be an improvement theres no question about that, but will he live up to his pricetag?
As for Breezer, you need to be realistic and listen to yourself. Top four finish with 3 classy players?????
Seriously, you really must be deluded. Perhaps you could push for fifth place if nobody else buys players but the fact is every squad around you will bring in better players and cancel out what Tottenham buy.
I seriously doubt that any player Tottenham buy will live up o the standards of the Arsenal or Liverpool teams. Modric may turn out to be good but would not match the likes of Adebayor, Fabregas, Walcott, Gerrard, Torres (to name a few) Perhaps Breezer should revise his aims for next season and be at least a little realistic.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:28
Typical Spurs fans…heard it last season, and the one before that. We’re a top 4 club, this is going to be our year…blah blah blah. Face the fact you have years or mediocracy to come….!
Villa all the way!!!
June 27th, 2008 at 12:30
Ermmmm Jonny Dead:
im a Yid but i think you might be pushing the boat out to far mate!!!!
squeeze in top 4 or 5th while the team gel!!!
Win the league????
June 27th, 2008 at 12:32
Why oh why are Villa not mentioned, except for the taken-as-inevitable sale of Barry to Liverpool?? That sale is not inevitable if the skint scousers are unable to afford his full value. Unless we get a minimum of £15million straight cash then Barry is going NOWHERE!!
Given that Villa have been linked with 100 or more signings this season I am disregarding most of them until they are unveiled by the club. However, I’m gonna list the rumours I rate highly, which if these or similar players are signed we can continue our ascent!!
1) Sidwell.
2) Robinson: for £5mil or less and if MON can recapture his form and confidence and the idiots in the Holte End give him a break he could be a good signing PLUS ANOTHER KEEPER
3) Anton Ferdinand: Would add good competition in CB. (I still have no idea we signed Knight and sold Cahill, I rate Cahill much higher).
4) A RIGHT BACK
5) Bentley/Lennon/ Sean Right Phillips: I would be happy with any of these signings to be honest to add to our attacking power.
Maybe another couple with MON’s added genius and insight, and how can we not further build on last season’s success???
June 27th, 2008 at 12:33
Jonny Dead does not speak for all us Yids.
I love your enthusiasm but please be a little more realistic. Lets just have a crack at 5th and see what happens.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:34
Howay the Toon:
Berba Keane
Santos Modric Diarra Bentley
Bale King Woodgate Hutton
Gomes
Thats Just adding 2 more players to our team (Diarra and Bentley)
You dont think that team could challenge for top 4???? then NUFC would be lucky to finish top 10
June 27th, 2008 at 12:36
Nice idea for a post…. but in the middle of June???…. Give it a few weeks for some business to start going down so we can actually guage what the teams are gonna look like next year (with the exception of that p***k Commolli who plays Brewsters Millions every summer and then sits there scratching his a**e wondering what went wrong…. must be the managers fault eh damien?….
June 27th, 2008 at 12:38
Anders well said, the only humble spurs fan on this site. There is no doubt that last season in my eyes Spurs had the best strike force in the league (especially Berbatov in cup game best striker I witnessed playing last season was really impressed by him.), so Dos Santos & Mod although good additions, your strengthening in areas that need no attention. Someone tell Ramos the bad news that not only does he look like Donald Fisher from Home & Away it’s defenders that you need DESPERATELY, otherwise mid table finish is on the cards again. Bet you all wish you’d been a bit quicker chasing Hart & the Dunnie monster.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:40
I’m Boro fan, just to clear that up from the start. I can see us improving by a couple of places, but nothing major.
I can see spurs pushing on a couple of places next season, but nothing major.
Spurs may well be screwing themselves over if the rumours of a swap deal between Bentley and Lennon are to be believed!
I cant see that being the signing that Spurs need, but i do see it as a positive step for Blackburn, they get Lennon plus the cash from the deal to buy a big central midfielder, and if Ince does the job, they could be up ther challenging Villa and pompey for 6/7 place!
June 27th, 2008 at 12:45
TheBlueway…….you are completely wrong.
Whilst we needed defenders for the first part of the season we added to these areas really very well in the Jan transfer window. Our midfield was a compltete joke for the whole season and that is where the problem lies and Ramos can see this. Every attack has to come through midfield….and when there isn’t one to speak of then it makes the defenders job almost impossible no matter who you have at the back. The crux of our midfield last year was….Zokora, jenas, lennon, Steed, Huddlestone, which is a joke of a midfield when you actually watch them play every week.

love it ! spurs idiots have started again !!!!
top 4,europe,better manager, cleared out all the dead wood, y o y o y do you do it to yourselves every year?
your just a mid table wana be club like most ov us,now get over it and move on!
June 27th, 2008 at 13:13
fgjhfi I hear what your saying and agree, but look how many goals you scored last season and how many you let in. Look at the season we had with Pearce when we had no Attack, no midfield apart from Barton, couldn’t buy a goal at home and we stayed up purely on our defence which was rock solid with James, Dunne, Distin, Thatcher and Richards who didn’t conceed many goals. So although midield is an area that needs attention is not as crucial as defence. We are in a similar situation we own 3 midfielders ( Johnson, Hamann, Fernandes) and have 6 attacking midfielders, not really very balanced i’m sure you’ll agree. Hughes know only too well that this is the area we need stengthening the most.
June 27th, 2008 at 13:19
‘Jonny Dead does not speak for all us Yids.
I love your enthusiasm but please be a little more realistic. Lets just have a crack at 5th and see what happens.’
With respect mate, that’s what happened this year. No-one ever won the Prem by aiming for fifth place. Man for man we should be a strong as any squad in the League. I definitely think this is going to be our year, the Carling Cup was a glimpse into the future, all we need to do is reproduce that form all season and we should be right up there with Man U and Chelski.
Some of you pessimists need to get behind the team and think big. We’re a huge club and it’s time to show it.
June 27th, 2008 at 13:24
well said Jonny, we have all the ingredients in place now to be a real force once more!
June 27th, 2008 at 13:32
@ yidyank
Once more?????
June 27th, 2008 at 13:39
ha ha ha!! Stop it seriously, my sides are starting to hurt from all the laughing.
Spurs are going to challenge for the title next year??? ha ha ha!! Yeah its really common that at team that finishes 11th in the league is a major challenger the next. Granted, Modric is a fantastic signing but he’s unproven in the PL and your squad, although much improved on last year already, will need time to gel.
What are you on Jonny? I’ll pay you good money for a hit because it’s got you sky high dude!!!
Congratulations though, you’ve now officially made yourself look the biggest twat on this blog and given us all a good laugh at Spurs fans yet again. When will you lot ever learn to just keep this crap to yourselves and save us all the embarassment.
BTW IMO Newcastle, Sunderland, West Ham and Spurs (yes I do think you’ll improve significantly) will be the most improved teams next season.
June 27th, 2008 at 13:44
Deja Vu this aint it??
Spurs this, Spurs that…..exactly the same as last season, lots of money thrown at biggish name players without much thought, end result….virtually nothing
10th place for Spuds, no better
June 27th, 2008 at 13:48
Spurs………yeah right. Modric wont cut it at this level, Dos Santos does not like being tackled, Berbatov not interested (if hes still there), dodgy keeper
Keep spending like this end they’ll end up like Leeds
June 27th, 2008 at 14:00
That’ll be the same Spurs that spend loads every summer and who, last year, were expected to improve on the previous season’s position? Seeing, will be believing.
June 27th, 2008 at 14:02
Definately Spurs, good signings & a poor season last year but Newcastle & Villa will also improve with Everton & West Ham to not struggle but to slip back on last seasons points tally.
June 27th, 2008 at 14:08
I’d like to say Spurs, but I know someone very well connected in the club and they tell me Robbie Keane wont be there next season and I think they’ll struggle without him.
Everton are the team we will see the biggest improvement in I think
June 27th, 2008 at 14:29
jonny dead and yidyank…….as i said i love your enthusiasm but for crying out loud be realistic….WE AINT GONNA WIN THE BLOODY LEAGUE BOYS so stop showing the rest of us up.
What’s changed from last season….we have dos santos…not proven in the PL, Modric likewise, gomes - lets see. Although i do think they will be good do you honestly think we can win the league with these 3 signings……listen to yourslves. It’s great to aim high but being delusional is not cool.
June 27th, 2008 at 14:35
Juande…..”modric won’t cut it at this level”. Ahhh that’s right, i forgot he was playing for The Dog and Duck in Swindon last year.
June 27th, 2008 at 14:40
OMG I bet that crap about Keane will be in the Mail tomorrow now!
June 27th, 2008 at 15:01
correct - Modric wasn’t playing for the dog and duck but he was playing in the Croation league 1 - NOT the premiership.
Don’t forget - Rebrov looked a good player in the top division in his country
say no more
June 27th, 2008 at 15:08
Now come on, fair do’s - Modric looked like a very handy player at the Euros and if (I say IF) he can perform like that for Spurs in the PL then they’ll improve well on last years position.
June 27th, 2008 at 15:10
Bloody hell. I reckon some spurs fans want to stop and have a re-think.
Beginning to sound more deluded than some fellow NUFC fans.
June 27th, 2008 at 15:31
Easy for Spurs to improve on last year.
If we go back to finsih 5th it will be a climb of 6 places.
Stupid to prdict top 4 at this stage untill the new team has played together, or been signed in some cases.
Arsenal Kids?
Gallas may behave like my toddler, but he almunia, Toure, Hleb (if he’s still there) Gilberto etc are hardly kids.
Ave age of Carling Semi Final team = 25 not 17!
June 27th, 2008 at 16:11
Modric might be a good signing - he’s totally unproven in this league and let face it it’s 50/50 on how well he will adapt. I don’t think Santos will ever adapt to getting kicked around on a rainy Dec night in Wigan etc. Also Gordon looked great up in Scotland but struggled last year so there’s no guarantee your new keeper will do any good! Also how the hell is he going to direct your back 4 (Welsh/English/Scottish) in Spanish - I can see that been fun, comedy Spurs defending highlights on MOTD anyone!!?
Also Spurs fans do realise that your form ALL last season was never any better than mid table? Basically I just don’t think Ramos has what it takes - I think Moyes or MON would have done a much better job in the league with exactly the same squad.
Don’t get me wrong I’d rather you finished top 4 than any team in there now (Well bar Villa) - but I can’t see anything other than 7-8th.
June 27th, 2008 at 17:36
spurs idiots you really are deluded. get a life and look around you at the real world ffs
June 27th, 2008 at 22:18
I’M A GOONER AND I FEAR THE YIDS,THEY SMASHED US AND BEAT CHELSKI TO WIN AT TROPHY,WE SHOULD ALL BEWARE,IF THEIR PLAYERS CLICK WE ALL NEED TO WORRY.
COME ON THE ARSENAL!
June 28th, 2008 at 10:25
I’M A MASSIVE SPURS FAN AND I THINK THAT THEY WILL BE IN THE TOP SIX NEXT SEASON,EUROPE BEWARE,KEANO AND CO. ARE COMING FOR THE UEFA CUP WITH A VENGEANCE, RAMOS IS DOING A MARVELLOUS JOB AND HE WILL BE THERE FOREVER LIKE FERGUSON @ UTD.”’SPURS ARE ON THEIR WAY TO WEMBLEY”’
June 29th, 2008 at 10:51
If you look at league position as being improvement on last year then, for obvious reasons, I think Wigan will surprise you all. Steve Bruce got our team really ticking last season and not having a run of 7 losses on the trot this season will give us a significant boost up the table.
Another reason is hopefully for the first time we will be adding to our squad instead of losing our best players and having to rebuild. I’m thinking 9th in the table for us.
June 29th, 2008 at 14:15
Tottenham and Sunderland for sure. Some of the potential signings like Dos Santos, Modric, Gomes, Crouch, E’too, Villa and Chivu (Spurs) and McGeady, Guiza, Bent, Evans, Cuellar in comparison to the 2 teams current positions i can see these 2 teams moving 5/6 places each up the table and most people i talk to agree. Roy Keane has took sunderland up so far it is unbelievable and i think they will be playing european football within 2 years. Spurs will be next year but not the uefa cup or intertoto. Wigan, Bolton, Boro and Newcastle will be competing with Stoke, Hull and west brom for the relegation places.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:48
funny stuff. is it just me or does everyone hates the spurs except for their own supporters. its going to be so great when berba and keane leave. who is going to score their goals. i see another 11th place again. sucks to be a spurs supporter

June 27th, 2008 at 14:40
OMG I bet that crap about Keane will be in the Mail tomorrow now!”
Indeed - it is in the mail and all other papers today because it is true, as I said last week. My source at the club is on the inside as you can get…..
July 5th, 2008 at 22:10
Are you serious? Newcastle? What a bunch of deluded idiots…Keegan is absolute garbage and im not bothered if they ended the season half decent, he’s a shockingly bad manager with a crap record and it will definately all end in tears.
Sunderland may improve but they’ve attracted no one so far and they didn’t last year, Keane has quality but his time is shite on paper…
My team Boro I don’t see us gettin in the top half no way…Mid table at the very best…
West Ham are so average and think they’re mint…they really arent..Curbishley will get the sack this season…
Chelsea to win the league for me…Think their gonna make a lot of big signings…
Liverpool will never win the league with Rafa in charge, no chance.
Arsenal-I dont know why he doesnt just buy some decent world class player for once instead of buying kids, albeit wonder kids, but their not the finished article and there’s a lack of experience there..
I think Everton a batting above their weight and if it wasn’t for Moyes they would not be finishing 5th regularly..
Hull n Stoke will be too weak for this league…Mowbray might keep West Brom up but i’d rather see him as Boro manager than Southgate.
July 7th, 2008 at 17:32
You’re saying that Keegan has a crap record? In his last stint with Newcastle his win percentage was over 50%, something not many managers can boast.
He also got Man City promoted to the Premier League, so where these comments about KK being a crap manager are coming from, I don’t know.
Newcastle could be one of the most improved teams next year, and I really hope they are, we shouldn’t be down in mid-table.
