Sergio Aguero ‘The New Maradona’: A Premier League Club Launches Bid But is it Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Manchester United, Man City or Everton?

Sergio Aguero: The ‘New Maradona’ Heading to the Premier League? The agent of Atletico Madrid’s brightest talent has hinted that one of the Premier League big boys had bid for one of the most highly-rated young stars in world football - the Argentinean forward Sergio Aguero.

His agent Jose Segui was quoted in the Spanish press as saying, “I’ve had interest from a leading English team and they’ve asked me to approach Atletico with a bid. I can’t say more until I’ve spoken to the club about the offer.” Interestingly he ruled out the Stamford Bridge billionaire’s which opens speculation concerning Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Man City and Everton who are all on the look out for strikers. He added, “All I can tell you is that it’s one of the best teams in Europe and it’s not Chelsea.”

It’s no surprise that the Premier League is taking notice of the young Argentine as he’s been destined for the top for a number of years despite his young age. Sergio Leonel ‘Kun’ Aguero Del Castillo began his career with Independiente where he broke an Argentine League record by becoming the youngest player to debut in the top division at just 15 years and 35 days old. This broke the record held by none other than Diego Maradona.

Sergio Aguero: Argentina’s Next World Star!Aguero spent 4 seasons with the Argentine club but only established himself as a first team regular in the 2005/06 season when he scored 18 goals in 36 League appearances. This was to be his last season in his homeland before Atletico pulled off an incredible coup to sign the young star on a 6-year contract despite interest from Arsenal, Liverpool, Palermo and Bayern Munich. The fee was reported to be around the €20m mark back in May 2006 so don’t expect Aguero to come cheap this time round. After all, this price tag made the teenager the most expensive player in Atletico’s history and he’s been a major success at the Vicente Calderon stadium.

He struggled somewhat in his first season in Spain alongside Fernando Torres after scoring just 6 goals in 38 League appearances (25 starts). However, last season Aguero enjoyed a superb campaign alongside former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan as he personally scored 20 League goals to finish 3rd top scorer in La Liga. Due to his impressive performances the 20-year-old won the Spanish League’s Antonio Puerta Player of the Year award which has seen the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Inter Milan reportedly expressing an interest.

Aguero is now fully established in the Argentine international side with 3 goals in 11 appearances but it’s his record at youth levels that marks him out as a future contender for World Player of the Year. He was part of the Argentina side that won the U20 World Cup in both 2005 and 2007. However, it was the 2007 tournament where Aguero’s talent shone brightest. He won the tournaments Golden Boot award (6 goals) as top scorer and the Golden Ball (player of the tournament) as he captained the side to victory. As a result he was named FIFA’s 2007 Young Player of the Year which marks him down as a very special talent.

Sergio Aguero: Is the Little Argentine’s Career Pointing Towards the Premier League?Aguero has earned himself the nickname ‘El Kun’ due to his likeness to a Japanese animation character but is also referred to as ‘punto preguntese’ which means ‘wonder dot’ in Spanish. The forward is deceptively strong despite his 5 ft 7 frame though he often relies heavily on his pace and ability on the ball.

It’s no surprise that the Premier League big boys are targeting him though it may take an extraordinary bid to prize him away from Madrid. However, he won’t have happy memories of his appearances in England so far in his career after making his international debut in a 3-0 defeat to Brazil at the Emirates in September 2006 and losing 1-0 at Bolton last season in the Uefa Cup where he was also red carded. However, at 20 and with his track record he would surely be a massive coup for any Premier League club.

So would you like Sergio Aguero to sign for your club or do you think his price tag would be too high for such a young player? Can you see your club being able to afford and attract such a highly rated star? Let’s hear your views.
