Tottenham Hotspur v Hull City: Tigers Cash in at Three Points Lane
Hull continue to impress while Tottenham continue to slide. That seems to be the quickest way to sum up the two teams so far this season. However if you wanted the lengthier version read on…
Spurs have not won any of their last seven Premier League games at White Hart Lane, losing four of those and scoring just five times. Spurs are the league’s lowest goal scorers with just four strikes and have only converted 7% of their shots into goals - the worst conversion rate in the division. Spurs have won just one of their last 13 league games and lost five of the last seven. And finally, this is Spurs’ worst start for 53 years and they have fewer points than Derby had at the same stage last season and we all know what happened there!
Only Chelsea (9) have picked up more points away from home than Hull. Geovanni has scored in four his six Premier League starts and there seems to just be a real belief within the Hull side that they can win games. That was certainly the case when they travelled down to the Emirates last week (blowing apart most people’s Premier 10 and Footy 15 entries!).
Hull went with a 4312 formation, trying to take the Gunners on. They were aware that Arsenal were reasonably vulnerable from set pieces and used this their advantage. In short Phil Brown did his homework and deserves an enormous amount of credit because he openly out-manoeuvred Arsene Wenger on the tactical stakes. And it wouldn’t be such a shock if he did the same to Juande Ramos who’s tactics are rapidly coming under fire at present.
During Spurs’ match with Portsmouth, the Spaniard decided to introduce Bent in place of Pavlyuchenko instead of pairing them together. The choice was met with chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing”; Spurs were after all trailing 2-0. So can they take any hope from this match?
The two teams have met 14 times in the league with five wins apiece and four draws. The only solace for Tottenham is their recent record again teams from Yorkshire. They have won their last five Premier League home games against clubs from that part of the World. Now you’re clutching at straws!
