Which Goalkeeper Would You Sign to Replace Gomes at Tottenham in January? Shay Given, David James, Ben Foster or Rob Green?

Is Gomes Worth Sticking With? This week the New Football Pools pundit Tony Cascarino claimed Tottenham should pull out all the stops to sign Newcastle’s 32-year-old goalkeeper Shay Given to replace error-prone Heurelho Gomes in the Spurs goal. The former Republic of Ireland striker had this to say on the goalkeeping dilemma facing Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane, “Spurs brought in Gomes to replace Paul Robinson after he made numerous mistakes last season but seemingly nothing has changed. I know that Harry Redknapp has been strongly linked with Newcastle’s Shay Given and for me, he would be perfect for Tottenham”.

The former Millwall and Chelsea star waxed lyrical on the attributes of the Republic of Ireland number 1 when he said, “Having played with Shay I may be a little biased but in my opinion he’s the most underrated goalkeeper in the Premier League”.

“He truly is Mr. Consistency and he can count himself extremely unlucky not to have any of the big four clubs after him. The problem for Shay is that most managers seem to want to bring in goalkeepers with a huge stature”.

Out with the Old and in with the New at the Lane?Given is being tipped to cost around £6m despite his age but Cascarino doesn’t see that being a negative, “I don’t see that being a problem for Harry as in goalkeeper terms, he’s relatively young. After all, Harry signed David James at Portsmouth at 36. Shay still has at least 4 or 5 years at the top level so it’s not a risk at all as he is extremely fit, hasn’t suffered that many injuries in his career and has an excellent attitude.”

Given isn’t the only Premier League keeper being linked to the club in recent weeks with Portsmouth veteran and England number one David James also rumoured to be a target. There’s also Robert Green at West Ham and Manchester United’s 3rd choice keeper Ben Foster. It’s widely expected that Redknapp will look to bring in a stopper with experience in the Premier League after the arrival of the highly-rated Gomes so spectacularly backfired.

So would you replace Gomes with another keeper at White Hart Lane or would you persevere in the hope he can recapture his old form? If you would replace him who would be your choice to come in? Vote and let’s hear your views.

  1. Steve Johnson Says:

Give Gomes a chance, his shot stopping is 2nd to none!

  2. Johnny Says:

Bring in Kameni, he is the one we should have got in the 1st place, agile, brave and not as clumsy

  3. Geordie boy Says:

Why would Shay want to join a smaller club that will be on its way to relegation. He loves the Toon and will never leave!

  4. matthew Says:

The best solution would be Carlo Cudicini. He has title winning experience, and is need of a move to guarantee first team football rather than job sharing with Cech. He would command the area well and can speak very good english by now. With King and Woody in front not much would get by. he would lead from the back and organise our defence well, plus chelsea are happier to do buisness with us than man utd would be for foster.. i say break the bank 11 million new record for a title winning goalie

  5. None Says:

None. Gomes is class and once the Media circus have nothing to home in on, he’ll prove it. Almunia, Cech and Reina have all made bad gaffs this season. Anyone remember anything about them in the media? Thought not!

  6. THE LAST HOTSPUR Says:

11m for Cudicini lol. Stand up material.

  7. streetcar Says:

  8. dazj Says:

Lol another deluded newcastle fan above. How can a team that has nt won a trophy in 60 years be bigger than anyone. Even sunderland are a bigger team than you lot lol. Before you start banging on about your stadium who cares cos spurs still have a much bigger fanbase than them and are a richer club. Do your self a favour shay and move on to a better club dont stay there out of pity for them and regret it when your career is over. oh and geordie boy thanks for the laugh mate.

  9. Shannon Says:

Gomes has made a few bad mistakes, but I’d stick with him. I think he’ll be a great keeper for us and a great character. I can’t stand the way the media are having a go at him and I hope the fans get behind him.
