Tottenham Sol Campbell Chants Crossed the Line But Football Needs Banter Says Tony Cascarino
There’s been widespread debate about the prosecution of those Tottenham fans who were caught singing disgraceful songs about Sol Campbell earlier in the season. Now as a player I was given plenty of stick from fans and not always just the opposition but not to the level Sol has received. I personally enjoy the banter that goes on around English grounds up and down the country. However, these particular chants crossed the line from banter to abuse.
It’s difficult to stamp out this sort of thing but now the authorities have made a stand it may start to disappear from our game. I honestly feel some fans just switch off and don’t realise what they are actually chanting or just plainly don’t care. However, we cannot lose the banter from the terraces as that’s part of the enjoyment of going to football matches. Banter between fans if great but sick chants shouldn’t be heard by young kids at grounds.
I can understand those Tottenham fans who feel as though their club has been victimised by this clampdown but it had to start somewhere. Spurs fans are hardly the worst in the game and we all know fans chant about some atrocious things. Real tragedies such as the Manchester United Munich disaster and the Holocaust have been used by some fans to insult the opposition. Now that truly is sick and I’m pleased to see that the authorities are finally going to try and put an end to this twisted behaviour.
Mickey taking is great fun but certain chants just go too far. It’s going to be difficult to stop but as least now it’s beginning to happen. Let’s hope we can strike a balance but maintain the usual English fan banter in the process.
