Liverpool Legend John Barnes on Arsenal Win v Roma & Why They Suit European Football

The Arsenal v Roma clash proved to me what I thought already, that the English clubs would have the upper hand over the Italians. If anything, Arsenal may be more suited to the style and tempo of Champions League football.

It’s unlikely you’d be facing a team like Stoke in Europe who would be right in your face throughout the game. Therefore, the added space and technical aspect of European football plays into Arsenal’s hands as they are as technically gifted as any other club and can play a quicker more physical game than their European opponents.

The only problem was that Arsenal failed to kill Roma off as their display warranted more than a single goal win. However, the Gunners should have enough about them to get a result over in Rome particularly as Emmanuel Adebayor should be back.

Robin Van Persie has been receiving all the plaudits for his displays of late but Adebayor shouldn’t be written off. The Togolese striker is a fantastic player and if Arsenal are to progress then I expect him to play a big part in that.
