Alan Hansen: ‘Giggs Should Win the PFA Award’ - Who Would You Vote For? Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Man City & Spurs Stars Nominated

Alan HansenThe PFA Awards nominees have been named with Manchester United players dominating the main award with five of their team named out of the six possible. The problem with these awards is that the player’s votes are cast in January which is hardly a reflection of a season’s work. In a perfect world the votes would be cast at the end of the season when you can judge who did exactly what but unfortunately that’s not the case.

Ryan Giggs for PFA Award? If you think back to January then it’s hardly any surprise United players dominate the nominees though there haven’t been as many star individual performers this season as in seasons past. It’s hard to pick out too many alternatives to the six names chosen with few players standing out consistently in this campaign.

If I were to cast a vote for my winner then I would have to go for Ryan Giggs. This may surprise many of you of who’d expect me to back a fellow centre-back in Nemanja Vidic or Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. But for me, Ryan has enjoyed a great season and has played an integral part in United’s success both in this campaign and over the years. When Ryan plays he performs to a very high standard. He is also very much a ‘team’ man in terms of his great work-rate and responsibility on the pitch. Not only have his performances been excellent but he is also a great ambassador for both his club and the game in general.

To play for a club as big as Manchester United you have to be special but to do it for as long as Ryan has and at 35-years-old is an incredible achievement. If Ryan were to win the PFA Award, it would be a tribute to a great player who has performed consistently throughout this campaign and for many seasons at the top level. Therefore, I’d be delighted if Ryan Giggs were to win it.

It’s extremely hard to choose a winner from the PFA Young Player of the Year nominees as none of them have been consistent throughout the whole season. Once again the votes for this award are made in January and thus I’d expect one for the Aston Villa pair of Gabriel Agbonlahor or Ashley Young to win it as their club were flying at the time. Since then both players have not been at their best which you can say about all the nominees who have been in and out of form this season.

Just look at Aaron Lennon at Tottenham, at the start of the season he could barely get a game at the club but now he’s terrorising defences on a weekly basis. Manchester United’s young centre-half Jonny Evans was brilliant for the side earlier in the season but he has struggled of late along with the entire United side who’ve been leaking goals. Therefore, I’d struggle to pick any of the six candidates nominated as a stand-out winner. It will be interesting to see who wins.

  1. James Says:

What a load of rubbish, how many games has he played? He has not even been Utds best player. Sentiment should not win him the player of THIS season award, if you want to give him something invent a service to football award or something.

  2. benny Says:

It is not about over the years, it is about this season. I am disappointed Alan! Giggs has done nothing of note this year and just give him a lifetime achievement award if people are so desperate to honour him.

  3. roland Says:

yeah! - i agree with both of the above! stevie g should win it and im a man u fan!

  4. M19 Blue Says:

Alan what a load of tosh…..just to agree with the previous posters Yes Giggs has had a great career, but an award winning season…NO!!!! Also Ronaldo??? Even rag fans are complaining about his contribution to their season….

  5. Red or Dead Says:

Vidic is surely the stand out name. Anyone can see that!

  6. THFC Says:

Aaron Lennon is the best young winger in this country by a mile, forget walcott and SWP, this lad is sensational. He should win young player of the year and will be pushing for the senior award next season too

  7. benny Says:

At the time the award was voted for Vidic was the standout player with Alonso a close second. Gerrard caught fire after the voting. Lampard and Hangelaand have been very good too.

  8. M19 Blue Says:

    THFC….Lennon….LOL

Ashley Young, SWP, James Milner, Walcott are all far better wingers…in fact my granny can cross better than him…..

  9. Steve Says:

Giggs!!!! Oh Mr Hansen, no wonder you work for the BBC, you clearly are so far up fergie’s backside it would be impossible for you to get a job anywhere else. The only utd player that deserves to be in that list is possibly Vidic.

  10. name Says:

I would vote for someone who deserves it

ie NOT someone from the GAME KILLING big 4
