Cascarino: Forget United Stars, Gerrard Should Win PFA Award ‘Hands Down’

Tony CascarinoThe PFA nominees were announced this week with some surprising names picked in my opinion. Edwin van der Sar may have broken clean-sheet records with Manchester United this season but if I was going to pick a keeper amongst the final 6 choices then it wouldn’t have been the Dutchman. Liverpool’s Jose Reina or Aston Villa’s Brad Friedel would have been ahead of him as they’ve performed far better than Van der Sar in my opinion.

Steven Gerrard Deserves to Pick Up Trophy AgainIt’s been a strange old season really in terms of big players not really performing as usual over the course of the campaign. There are no Chelsea players amongst the nominees and to be fair it’s hard to pick out anyone who has excelled consistently at the Bridge. Then there’s Arsenal, their usual candidates such as Emmanuel Adebayor and Cesc Fabregas have both struggled with injury. Therefore, it’s no surprise the final 6 are dominated by mainly Manchester United players.

Outside of United and Liverpool, you could say Marouane Fellaini at Everton has had a terrific debut year and really should be amongst the young player of the year nominees despite his poor disciplinary record. His team-mate Tim Cahill has done well too. Gareth Barry has had another good season for Villa. There’s also Brede Hangeland at Fulham who has been excellent and a big part of their massive turnaround this season.

The nomination of Ryan Giggs is a funny one. Ok, Ryan has done well this season but in terms of Premier League football he has only started 12 games. For me, there is only one winner and he is the only non-United player in the final six, that’s Steven Gerrard.

Stevie surely is the winner hands down. He’s scored 13 league goals and produced some incredible performances in a great season for his club. He has also led by example and for me is without a doubt the man who should win.
