Tony Cascarino: Marouane Chamakh is a ‘Poor Man’s Ronaldo’ – Verdict on Arsenal, Spurs, Sunderland & Fulham Target

Marouane ChamakhThere are a number of clubs reportedly chasing Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh this summer with Sunderland, Tottenham and Fulham strongly linked. Arsene Wenger has also been linked with a move but I doubt he is ready for that level just yet.

Chamakh is technically very good and is similar to Cristiano Ronaldo in his style, tricks and even his looks. However, he’s very much a poor man’s version as he’s nowhere near as good. In fact, he is like Ronaldo at his worse in terms of going to ground at every opportunity. The Moroccan is one of the worst around in terms of looking for fouls and penalties. He also scores nowhere near as many goals as his Portuguese lookalike. What he does possess is quick feet, a good ability on the ball and a decent aerial strength as you’d expect seeing as he is 6 ft 2.

He is the type of signing that you’d invest in, in the hope he’d improve. However, every time I’ve seen him play, he’s been very frustrating, mainly because he goes down so easily. I’ve found myself looking out for snipers in the crowd.

The problem with signing players from the French league at the moment is that you’ve got to take into account just how weaker it is compared to the Premier League.

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW

Chamakh scored 13 league goals last season for the champions Bordeaux which is the equivalent of about 7 or 8 goals in England. A great example of this is Johan Elmander who joined Bolton from Toulouse last season in a big money deal after scoring 22 league goals in two seasons in France. However, he only managed to score five for the Trotters in 2008/09.

The Moroccan player’s price is sure to be high too after Bordeaux won the French title but for me, Chamakh does have talent but he’s far from the finished article.

  1. Babar says:

    Are you crazy?
Ronaldo is worth 90M+ EUR and Chamack around 9M EUR. Chamack would be a good substitute in Arsenal.

  2. Stephen says:

Hahahahaha. Comparing Chamahk to Ronaldo. Nice one Tony!

  3. Tittle Tattle says:

And I always trust the opinion of this man because he has sense and sensibility…

  4. Darri says:

Unbelievable , what on earth do these managers see in this guy .It seems that managers have become as stupid as the dimbos that they command ,he’s a championship player at best and any premiership manager who makes a move for him ought to lose his job . ARSENHOLE AND WEST HUMMM ARE THE ONLY CLUBS THAT DESERVE THIS GUY .

  10. RTG says:

Tony Cascarino – poor mans Ian Ormondroyd / Niall Quinn

  11. terry says:

give the Moroccan a chance he come from a poor upbringing and he is a Muslim he probably did not have many girl friends to become a footballer is a great achievement and for chamack to be mentioned with ronaldo is wonderful, so lay off and be humble,

  12. NOURI says:

hi tony he plays better than you chamakh so lay off the guy and keep your nonsense analyse for the footix -

  13. Joegun says:

Tony mate you are really talking a lot of tosh. This kid supposedly a replacement for Adebayor not Ronaldo. Its a bit harsh comparing him with a top top player its a bit like comparing you with Maradona. The kid is alright give him a chance with a little bit of guidance from Wenger he might turn out a great player. Didn’t Man utd turn down Zidane when he was young they thought he was rubbish.Wasn’t Thierry a rubbish winger when he came to Arsenal? We just don’t know what will happen

  14. Karthik says:

You can’t state the number of goals scored in france to england as a rule. Adebayor never scored a lot when he was at Monaco… but he scored 30 in a season in England. It’s not as black and white as you make it out to be.

  15. Franck says:

I’m from Bordeaux and I wonder if Tony ever saw Chamakh playing a game ! He’s not at all the kind of guy looking for fouls, falling all the time. Nota at all ! He is a huge fighter with a very strong physic. He is a great technician. He was not a great scorer but improved a lot. We all wish he will stay in Bordeaux and the owner of the club too who try to make him sign a contract extension with a salary like the one he should have in England. If we don’t succeed to keep him, it will be very sad, but we are sure that the club which will have Chamakh will be very satisfied and the fans will love him !

  16. Franck says:

And he has nothing to see with Ronaldo !
I’m sure Tony speaks about someone else…

  17. OMG says:

“The problem with signing players from the French league at the moment is that you’ve got to take into account just how weaker it is compared to the Premier League.”
Yes, as we saw in Champion’s League…
As we say in my country : “trou du cul va !”

  18. Thomas says:

  20. dooswan says:

tony cascarino was a failure as a player aand is now a failure as a pundit..

  21. Henry says:

“The problem with signing players from the French league at the moment is that you’ve got to take into account just how weaker it is compared to the Premier League.”

And then you look at what Thierry Henry did when he came to the premier league..
