Alan Hansen’s Premier League Preview: Liverpool v Hull

Alan HansenFor me, this is arguably the biggest home banker on this weekend’s Premier 10 coupon. Liverpool have begun to show their title chasing form of last season while Hull look destined for a long hard battle against the drop.

Fernando TorresBoth form and history suggests this should be a relatively comfortable win for Rafa Benitez’ side. Liverpool have never lost against the Tigers in their history, a record that includes 11 wins and 3 draws in all competitions. However, Hull did pick up a 2-2 draw at Anfield last season after taking a two goal lead. Despite that result, Phil Brown’s side are not showing anything like the form they showed at the start of the 2008/09 season so I cannot see a repeat this weekend.

At this stage last season, Hull had 7 more points than they do now and were providing shock away results consistently. However, this season the Tigers have yet to register an away win having drawn at Wolves and lost at both Chelsea and Sunderland. It’s hard to imagine that they’ll do any better an Anfield with Liverpool’s recent home record. After all, Rafa’s team have lost just once in their last 33 Premier League games at home.

The Reds have won their last 5 matches home and away in all competitions and scored 50 goals in their last 17 league games. In this time no side has managed to stop Liverpool scoring and the way Fernando Torres is playing, I wouldn’t expect Hull to stop them either. The prolific Spaniard has now scored 5 goals in his last 5 league appearances and will fancy his chances against the Tigers.

Hull are a shadow of the side that shocked the Premier League last season while Liverpool are slowly but surely getting stronger. I am backing my old club to win on Premier 10 this week although they’ll have to tighten up significantly at the back. After all they’ve conceded 9 goals already which is more than they’ve ever conceded after six games in Premier League history. All of those 9 goals have come via set-pieces so if Hull are to shock Anfield, that’s their obvious route.
