Cascarino: Spurs Star Huddlestone Doesn’t Fit into Capello’s System But Jenas Can Make Plane
Tottenham midfield duo Jermaine Jenas and Tom Huddlestone have both been surprisingly called up to the England squad by Fabio Capello despite neither being in great form in recent weeks. In fact, both put in pretty poor performances in the North London derby at the Emirates a fortnight ago so their inclusion is a bit of a shock to me.
Huddlestone is a bit of an enigma in the fact that his passing is top drawer but his mobility isn’t. He would be ideal in a midfield three with two more mobile players around him but I’m not sure he’s suited to playing as one of a central midfield two at the highest level as the game could pass him by. I don’t really see how Tom would fit into Capello’s plans with the current system he uses so his chances of making the squad for South Africa are very slim.
Jenas on the other hand has a good chance even though he is very up and down in his form for Tottenham. I don’t see him breaking into the actual side but he has every chance at grabbing a place in the squad as a backup. Unlike Huddlestone, Jenas is very mobile and far quicker than he’s given credit for and Capello may see him as decent cover for his first choice stars. After all, modern football is all about athleticism and that is what Jermaine has in abundance.
Neither of these players are likely to break into Capello’s first choice eleven but Jenas more so than Huddlestone may earn a place on the plane as at best a squad player.

‘After all, modern football is all about athleticism and that is what Jermaine has in abundance.’
Unfortunately for him, the ability to actually play a bit also has a place in modern football.
