Alan Hansen’s Premier 10 Preview: Manchester United v Portsmouth

Alan HansenIt doesn’t get any easier for bottom club Portsmouth as they face a trip to Old Trafford to take on a Manchester United side that must be brimming with confidence following their emphatic win at the Emirates Stadium last weekend. The performance of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side certainly surprised me as they produced an excellent team performance and tore the Arsenal defence to shreds at times.

Wayne RooneyNo defenders will fancy playing against Wayne Rooney at the moment as he is in the hottest streak of form in his career and the goals are flowing. He has scored seven goals in his last five matches in all competitions and will be looking to fill his boots against a Pompey defence that lost its best defender in Younes Kaboul last week. Wayne has now scored an incredible 13 goals in his last eleven league outings and boasts a record of nine goals in twelve Premier League games against Pompey.

Rooney will be ably assisted by the likes of Michael Carrick and Nani who were both excellent against Arsenal. Carrick has not been at his best this season but he controlled the match in North London and Nani was sensational at times and will have convinced his many critics that he has finally come of age at United.

Portsmouth are looking for their first league win at Old Trafford since October 1957 when Paul Anka was number one in the charts with ‘Diana’. That year the average house price in the UK was £2,330, Elvis moved into Graceland and the Cavern club (where the Beatles started) was opened in Liverpool. Records may be made to be broken but unfortunately for Avram Grant’s side I cannot see this long win-less run one ending this weekend. After all, United have won the last seven league meetings between these two at Old Trafford since. In fact, Portsmouth have only scored one league goal at the Theatre of Dreams in the Premier League and none in their last four trips.

Portsmouth have failed to win any of their last eight away league trips (6 defeats), lost the last four and not scored in the last three. United on the other hand have won their last four at Old Trafford without conceding. They’ve also scored 15 goals with Rooney getting seven of them. Therefore, this one’s a no-brainer, I have to back a home win for United with an estimated £30,000 Premier 10 jackpot to be won. On paper, this is an obvious home banker.
