Liverpool v Everton: Top Football Writers Predictions
Liverpool v Everton promises to be an intriguing Merseyside derby as both sides have hit a rich vein of form ahead of this clash after relatively disappointing seasons. Rafa Benitez’ team are unbeaten in their last six league matches (four wins) and have kept five clean-sheets in that run. Everton are unbeaten in their last nine league games since losing 2-0 in the last Merseyside derby. They have won four of their last five including clean-sheets in the last three games. These stats suggest that both of these teams should be confident and there is little to choose between the teams.
Everton’s derby record in recent years at Anfield is not the best. The Toffees have not won away at their neighbours since September 1999. In fact, the Blues have actually not won any of their last nine league trips to Anfield but they have drawn on five occasions including a 1-1 draw last season. Do you think Liverpool will complete the league double over Everton this weekend? Can David Moyes’ Blues end their eleven year win-less run against the Reds at Anfield?
The New Football Pools has gathered members of the FWA (Football Writers Association) to get their predictions on the Premier League clashes every week and surprisingly given Everton’s current form, none are going for an away win. The panel includes the likes of Patrick Barclay (The Times), Shaun Custis (The Sun), Andy Dunn (News of the World), Martin Lipton (Daily Mirror) and Paul Hetherington (Daily Star Sunday).
The journalists make not expect Everton to win this one but they are split between whether Liverpool will win the derby or it will be drawn. Martin, Paul and Shaun are backing Rafa Benitez’ team to take the points while Andy and Patrick expect honours to be even.
Are you surprised that none of Fleet Street’s finest have backed an Everton win? Do you think they are right to write off the Toffees’ chances?

The New Football Pools pundits Alan Hansen and Tony Cascarino are also split regarding the Merseyside derby. Alan is backing the home win while Tony fancies the draw in this one with Everton already showing they are hard to beat in recent trips to Stamford Bridge and the Emirates.
