Alan Hansen’s Premier League Preview: Burnley v Wolves

Alan HansenBurnley and Wolves meet at Turf Moor in yet another ‘6-pointer’ this weekend as both promoted sides struggle to find the consistency to climb out of trouble. Only goal difference separates the teams although the Clarets have played a game more. This promises to be an extremely close match but with time running out for both teams, I have a feeling Brian Laws’ side will grab all 3 points this weekend.

David NugentNeither side can claim to be in form with Burnley having won just one of their last 16 league matches while Wolves have won one of their last eleven league matches. Mick McCarthy knows exactly where his team’s problems lie but solving them is another thing entirely. To put it simply, the Wanderers don’t score enough goals despite a variety of strikers at the club. The men from Molineux have not scored in any of their last three league games and have actually failed to net in 13 of their 28 league matches this season. Wolves may have a chance of scoring this weekend as their opponents Burnley haven’t been struggling to score of late but it’s their inability to defend that has cost them dear.

The Clarets have not kept a clean-sheet in their last 18 league matches. In fact, they’ve only kept three this season. Brian Laws’ team have conceded two of more in four of their last five matches which has left them needing to score plenty of goals to pick up any points at all. However, Wolves lack of goals and the fact that Burnley have scored in all 14 home games, will give them plenty of hope for this clash.

The likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Arsenal have not been able to stop Burnley scoring at Turf Moor this season, so it’s highly unlikely Wolves will either. The Clarets have scored single goals in seven of the last eight at home. The problem for Brian is that every visiting side has scored at Turf Moor since Hull failed to back in October.

Burnley’s record at home has dipped dramatically in recent months but they’ve still only lost three times in front of their own fans. Brian will have his team fired up as they simply cannot afford to lose this match. David Nugent is in a rich vein of form after scoring three goals in his last five league appearances and a solitary strike may well be enough to clinch a massive three points this weekend. Therefore, I am backing a narrow home win on Premier 10 for the Clarets. With an estimated £30,000 jackpot to be won this weekend, who will you back?
