I am shocked with some of the squad selections of the nations going to the World Cup. In comparison to other countries, Fabio Capello’s England squad was generally what we expected with no real omissions that would lead to a public outcry. However, the likes of France, Brazil and Argentina have all disregarded players that I would have thought would have been certs to go the World Cup.

According to reports in both the Spanish and Argentine press, Liverpool are set to sign Valencia’s talented young midfielder Ever Banega for a fee of £8.5m as Rafa Benitez begins his rebuilding process at Anfield. The young Argentinean has been a long-term target of Benitez but also David Moyes who attempted to sign the 21-year-old on loan last summer. However, it would seem that Liverpool rather than Everton have won the race for his signature.

There weren’t many shocks in Fabio Capello’s 30-man provisional England squad for the World Cup with the Italian opting mainly for experience and rewarding those players who have performed well for him. Most of those involved have been players he has dealt with in his time in charge with a few exceptions such as Tottenham’s Michael Dawson and Tom Huddlestone plus Manchester City’s Adam Johnson.

I cannot say I am surprised by the sacking of Gianfranco Zola by West Ham this week as it is typical of the way the club is now being run. Since David Sullivan and David Gold took over at Upton Park it was painfully obvious they didn’t want the Italian in charge but they wanted him to resign rather then pay him off.

Fulham take on Atletico Madrid tonight in the biggest game of the club’s history and the whole of England will be behind them. Roy Hodgson has done an incredible job and if he is to leave this summer, he will go down as one of the Cottagers best ever managers. He deserves the manager of the year accolade whether his Fulham side wins or not after a remarkable season particularly in Europe.

Sevilla’s exciting Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano looked set to join Italian giants AC Milan last summer but talks broke down over the fee involved. Chelsea and Manchester United have also been strongly linked with moves in the past but it seems as though Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is set to make his bid this summer as he eyes the ‘special’ player to take his young Spurs side to the next level as they step up to join Europe’s elite in the Champions League.

Chelsea ended their 2009/10 season in style with an 8-0 drubbing of Wigan to crown a successful first campaign for Carlo Ancelotti. Any doubts that they would throw away the title at Stamford Bridge were blown away within 6 minutes when Nicolas Anelka opened the scoring as the Blues went on a scoring spree that their fans will never forget, setting records in the process.
