Barcelona beat Liverpool to the signing of Brazilian striker Keirrison last summer in a deal worth £12m. However, reports in both Brazil and Portugal suggest the player on loan at Benfica may well be moving to Anfield in January in a 6-month loan deal. Barca’s summer move disappointed Rafa Benitez who had been tracking the youngster for some time had failed with a move in the last January transfer window.

There’s been plenty of exciting thrills and spills in the Premier League of late with a number of shock victories resulting in some massive jackpot wins on Premier 10 this season. This includes a £45,000 rollover win for one Chelsea fan a fortnight ago when Arsenal won 3-0 in the North London derby and my old club Liverpool were humbled at Craven Cottage by Roy Hodgson’s Fulham.

This showpiece friendly in Qatar will be great for team atmosphere and morale but will it count for anything if England meet Brazil in the latter stages of the World Cup? I’d have to say no. If these two teams do meet again in South Africa they will have vastly different elevens on the field and the match will be played at a totally different tempo and spirit. However, one thing this match will do is provide Fabio Capello with more of an idea of who he believes will be good enough to make his squad and to perform against the best international teams in the world.

Tottenham midfield duo Jermaine Jenas and Tom Huddlestone have both been surprisingly called up to the England squad by Fabio Capello despite neither being in great form in recent weeks. In fact, both put in pretty poor performances in the North London derby at the Emirates a fortnight ago so their inclusion is a bit of a shock to me.

Aston Villa’s Stephen Warnock has been called up to the England squad and rightly so after performing consistently at club level for a number of seasons. Warnock is a real ‘steady Eddie’ type of player, he is not that eye-catching or will you see him perform stunningly but he is consistent and does a god job for the side.

With Emile Heskey and Carlton Cole missing through injury there’s a chance for some of England’s other strikers to stake a claim for a World Cup squad place alongside definite traveller Wayne Rooney. Peter Crouch doesn’t seem to have convinced Capello yet of his abilty but for me he can have as big an impact at the World Cup as Rooney or Gerrard. He is so much better than all the other strikers England have available to play his role and I’m certainly not convinced by Emile Heskey even though he is currently first choice under Capello.
