Sunderland ended their 14-match winless league run in midweek with a resounding 4-0 home victory against Bolton and how they needed it. A terrible sequence of results has seen the Black Cats slip from challenging for a European spot to facing the serious threat of a relegation battle. That win has given Steve Bruce a bit of breathing space but now they’ve finally won a match, I expect another good performance against Man City with that monkey finally off their backs.

The Times’ chief football writer Patrick Barclay has made his predictions for this weekend’s Premier League fixtures as he competes in the The New Football Pools - Football Writer’s league for charity. He has gone mainly with the favourites although he has also predicted a couple of upsets.

Theo Walcott is back in the England squad for tonight’s game with Egypt despite a pretty awful season for Arsenal. He has played very little football but apart from the recent match with Sunderland, he has done very little. However, I do feel that Fabio Capello knows how to get the best out of Walcott and will give him every chance to make the squad. It’s a shame Tottenham star Aaron Lennon is not fit as he was definitely the in-form right winger in the Premier League. He has thrilled the White Hart Lane fans this season with some scintillating performances for Harry Redknapp. Spurs and England need him back fully fit and firing as soon as possible.

There is plenty of debate as to the merits of both Everton’s Leighton Baines and Aston Villa’s Stephen Warnock in regards to making the England World Cup squad. For me, Baines is the one I would choose. There isn’t too much between the two left-backs as both have enjoyed good seasons at club level but the Toffees defender just has the edge.

Stoke and Manchester City meet for the third time in eleven days having drawn the previous two clashes 1-1. There has to be winner this time and my money is on the Potters whether it will come in normal time, I am not so sure.

The Chelsea v Arsenal match was an intriguing contest between two of the best teams in the country who play with both differing styles and attitudes. While Arsene Wenger’s side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession without causing too many problems to the Chelsea defence, the Blues were more than happy to surrender ground, soak up any pressure and hit the Gunners on the break. The top of the table clash was of massive importance to Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United fans but for one Birmingham City fan, this match had a £30,000 Premier 10 jackpot win riding on it.
