Rafa Benitez is reported in the French press to be stepping up his pursuit of Marseille’s powerful left-back Taye Taiwo after Inter Milan showed an interest. Ideally Liverpool would prefer to wait until the summer to sign the powerful Nigerian but with Jose Mourinho ready to pounce, it would seem a deal will be pushed through as soon as Ryan Babel departs from Anfield.

A number of Premier League clubs have been alerted by Marseille’s playmaker Mathieu Valbuena’s latest outburst with Second City rivals Aston Villa and Birmingham reportedly heading the queue. Liverpool, Everton and West Ham were linked with the diminutive star last summer but it now looks like a straight battle between Alex McLeish and Martin O’Neill for the French star, at least in terms of the English clubs interest.

However, Sunderland have now emerged as front-runners due to their strong financial backing followed by North London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal who have also expressed their interest in the Marseille captain.

Everton are reportedly in talks to sign Marseille’s captain Lorik Cana. It would be a very interesting signing if a move does come off although for me, he is very similar to Marouane Fellaini who is already at the club. I’ve seen a lot of the player over the past few years as he has been a key player for my old club and he would definitely bring more tenacity and stature to an ever improving Toffees team.
