Injuries look set to play a significant role in Northern Ireland’s preparations for their game against Poland at Windsor Park after strikers Martin Paterson and Kyle Lafferty both had to withdraw from the squad with hamstring and ankle problems respectively. To make matters worse for boss Nigel Worthington, Steve Davis and George McCartney will also miss the tie after soft bookings during the routine 3-0 win in San Marino earned them one match suspensions.

The Poles had high hopes for Euro 2008 after an excellent qualifying campaign which saw them win their group ahead of Portugal. However, a convincing 2-0 defeat to tournament favourites Germany has left them with a mountain to climb to beat an excellent Croatia side rightly considered dark horses for the competition.

On paper this match looks a definite ‘home banker’ with the Germans renowned tournament specialists and Poland usually flattering to deceive. However, it was Poland that finished top of their qualifying group ahead of Portugal whilst the Germans came second to the Czechs in their group. Despite this, it would take a brave man to back against Joachim Low’s impressive side.
