Russian hitman Pavel Pogrebnyak moved to Bundesliga giants Stuttgart last weekend for a cut-price fee despite Premier League interest this summer. The highly-rated 25-year-old international signed for a mere £4m which prompts the question, why didn’t the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and Tottenham take a gamble on him.

The 25-year-old currently plies his trade for Zenit St Petersburg in his homeland and is rated as one of his country’s top strikers. He rejected a move to Blackburn in January but with his contract set to expire in November he should be available in a cut price deal if the Gunners make their move.

Arguably the best left-back at last summer’s Euro 2008 finals was Russia’s outstanding Yuri Zhirkov. The CSKA Moscow star was in sensational form as the Russians stormed into the semi-finals on the back of a 3-1 win over the Dutch. Despite the loss to Spain a number of the Russian players impressed during the tournament though Arsenal’s Andrey Arshavin received most of the plaudits. However, reports suggest Zhirkov will be the next Russian import to the English top flight with Liverpool set to steal the left-sided star from under Chelsea’s noses.
