William Gallas was a ‘Daft’ Choice as Arsenal Captain Claims Former Chelsea & Aston Villa Star

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Tony CascarinoIt’s been a terrible week for Arsenal but at least Arsene Wenger has made a stand over William Gallas’ outburst. He left him out against City but it would seem apart from stripping him of the captaincy there will be no further punishment. It’s now up to the player and how he performs upto January as to whether he has a future at the club. He has to prove he wants to play there through his performances and by showing he won’t be an unsettling influence on the camp.

He Should Not Have been Gunners Captain in the First PlaceThe ball is totally in Gallas’ court now, if he tows the line then he may have a future, if he doesn’t then he’ll be off. My personal opinion is that Arsenal would be better off without him. For me, he’s a whinge-bag, one of those players that believes everything should revolve around him. This sort of attitude would drive me crazy if I was his team-mate. To be honest when he was first appointed as captain I felt it was a daft decision. Opinions on Gallas both inside and outside of the game are not generally good. I know he was not particularly liked when he was at Chelsea and a few of the players there questioned his attitude and commitment to the team. There certainly weren’t any tears when he left the club.

When he was at Chelsea he was fortunate that he played alongside the likes of John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho who are both top notch defenders and made him look better than he is. In his time at the Bridge he was often played as a full-back by Mourinho but Gallas was determined to play in the centre and that attitude ultimately led to his departure. Now Gallas is a good centre-half but he is not a great centre-half so for him to have the ego he obviously has is wrong. All you have to do is look at what he did at Birmingham last season when he sat on the pitch refusing to come off to see he can be pathetic at times and this latest outburst is yet another occasion.
