Greatest Football Moments

The Pundits Favourites

Now we couldn't run a poll and not ask our pundits now could we...Here's who gets their vote for football's greatest moment.

Graham Poll

As a former referee, we have no doubt that Graham will have a bucket load of personable football memories but here's his top three from ours...

1. Geoff Hurst Goal and Lap of Honour

English football's finest moment and let's celebrate success. To see the unbridled joy on the players faces, Nobby dancing, it's pure gold for any English football fan.

2. Johan Cruyfff's Turn

The man was a genius who had vision and such skill. The Ronaldo step over is much over rated when compared to the Dutch master.

3. Gazza's Dentist Chair

The goal was fantastic and the celebration was funny and a dig at those who knocked the England players behaviour in the build up. I was at Wembley that dat and will never forget it.

And if that's not enough, click here to hear Graham's explain why these three got his vote.

Charlie Webster

Charlie's still keeping quiet over any behind the scene antics at Real Madrid but we're sure she'd love to have some of them in the list but for now here's her top three from our list...

1. Gazza's tackle booking and tears

This has got be number one just because of my memories that go with it and even watching it now makes me feel all emotional! I was only 8 and I remember been so upset, crying my eyes out watching Gazza and England knocked out of the World Cup. The 'moment' reflects such patriotism and shows what an influence Gazza was to the game and fans.

2. Geoff Hursts Goal and Lap of Honour 1966

So I may not remember it as i was waiting to be born but I have seen it many a time and I say of course it was a goal and we won anyway! I hope I get to see England win the World Cup soon!

3 Beckham's free kick vs Greece 2001

Because it was simply an amazing free kick; 'what a goal' and what a reaction from the fans. I remember watching it jumping up and down screaming, that nearly made me cry as well, infact I think I did shed a tear.

Mark Chapman

Mark doesn't need much opportunity to share his boyhood memories of Manchester United but here's who he rates as truly great from our top 10...

1. Maradona's Hand of God

This will probably raise a few eyebrows but when I think about what the term "great moments in football" actually mean I think about completely unique, utterly absurd things be them good or bad and this, regardless of what it meant, was exactly that. It will forever be in the history books and forever be on football fans lips.

2. Rene Higuita's Scorpion Kick

And the same goes for this. Whenever a keeper makes an excellent, acrobatic save, it always reminds people of Rene Higuita's Scorpion Kick and that, to me anyway, signifies greatness.

3. The Johan Cruyff Turn

What can I say but genius, utter genius.

Rachel Wright

Rachel says she still gets goosebumps when watching her Liverpool: Champions of Europe 2005 DVD but as that's not on the list, here's her other top three greatest footballing moments...

1. Gazza Dentist Chair

I only have fond memories of Euro 96 despite semifinal heartache. I was just 13 at the time and it was during this tournament that I first experienced a live match (unfortunately not this one) and when I recall the tournament it is this goal and celebration that first comes to my mind.

2. Geoff Hurst's Goal and Lap of Honour

Way before my time and the way things are going something I'll never experience first hand but I have to have this in my top three. Every time a new tournament comes up (obviously excluding the last!) there is just the most amazing sense of national pride; flags hanging out of windows and cars, cheering crowds and tension (usually followed by anguish) painted on fans faces and it is all in anticipation of experiencing what Hurst and co did all those years ago.

3. Rene Higuita's Scorpion Kick

This is just fun, isn't it. And mimicked on national television by the Honey Monster - what's not to like about this?!

Christian Goodbrand

How Christian wanted to add in the 1991 FA Cup Tottenham beating Arsenal 3-1 but us being more neutral said no! So here's his top three from our list...

1. Gazza's tackle booking and tears

I was 15 and a season ticket holder at Tottenham when England reached the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup so knew full well how good Paul Gascoigne was as a player. However, in that tournament he surpassed any level he had displayed previously in his career as this was against the best in the world. The semi-final summed up Gazza's career...in terms of the highs and lows. The fact it shouldn't have been a booking as well makes it stand out in my memory. He remains the most impressive player I have seen in an England shirt.

2. Maradona's Hand of God

For me, Diego Maradona was the best player in the world and in the 1986 tournament he showed it. But for all his magical displays his handball in the quarter-finals against England remains one of the most iconic moments in football. The fact that he was so sneaky in the way he faked a header added to the cheek of it all. The looks on Peter Shilton and Terry Fenwick's faces when they'd realised the goal had been given is also priceless.

3. Carlos Alberto Team Goal 1970

It was a tough choice between Carlos Alberto's goal and the 1966 World Cup but I have to go with Brazil even though I was not alive for either. The Brazil team of 1970 has an almost mythical status for playing quality attacking football and the goal was so effortless in its creation and execution i had to go with that one.
