We let ourselves down - Smith

23rd November 2008

Goalkeeper Graeme Smith admitted Motherwell had let themselves down in their 4-1 defeat by Hibernian at Fir Park.

Well produced the worst display of Mark McGhee's reign as they slid to ninth place in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

Hibs had already come close twice before John Rankin fired them ahead from 20 yards in the sixth minute. Bob Malcolm levelled with a superb 20-yard free-kick but a well-taken goal by Dean Shiels and a 30-yard rocket from Steven Fletcher put Hibs back in command.

Smith had kept the score down with two last-ditch stops from Derek Riordan but the former Celtic player beat him in the last minute. and the Motherwell keeper knows each player must do better at Aberdeen next weekend.

"I played my part in us getting beat as well, the 11 of us that were out there have to take an equal share of the blame and try to move on," he told PA Sport. "Sometimes you can get away with it if one or two boys don't perform. We probably had 11 of us that didn't perform and that's what happens.

"Hibs got an easy three points from us, which is not like us. All through the team we let ourselves down, but we need to bounce back next week and get a result. It's football, it's how you react. You can mope about and be disappointed but we are going to be in on Monday trying to rectify what went wrong."
