Latapy delight at Falkirk honour
27th November 2008
Russell Latapy has described himself as "surprised, delighted and honoured" after Falkirk decided to turn Saturday's clash with Hibs into a personal tribute to their evergreen midfielder.
The 40-year-old has made only two starts and two substitute appearances so far this season but remains a vital part of the Bairns' set-up as both player and reserve-team coach.
The Trinidad and Tobago veteran will be watched by the commissioner from his country's embassy in Britain this weekend and will be inducted into his club's hall of fame following five years' service. The former Rangers and Dundee United playmaker will also be presented with a special award from Falkirk and home fans are being encouraged to wear something in the red of Latapy's country's colours as part of the celebrations that also mark his decade in Scottish football.
The 'Russell Latapy Day' is the brainchild of supporter Keith Miller and the player himself has confessed to being touched by what he sees as recognition from the fans of his contribution to the club's recent success.
He said: "I'm very surprised, delighted and honoured to have this Russell Latapy Day on Saturday. It's not every day something like this happens and I'm really happy because it's a way, in my mind, of the fans showing an appreciation of what I've done in the last five years."
