Fulop signs new Black Cats deal

27th February 2009

Sunderland keeper Marton Fulop has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2012.

The Hungary international, who is currently keeping record £9million signing Craig Gordon out of the team, has pledged his future to the Black Cats after impressing in a run which has seen him start 20 of the last 22 games.

Fulop said: "I am delighted to sign. I am pleased with the progress the club has made and I am delighted that I got my chance in the team. I am happy to commit."

The 25-year-old, who joined the club from Tottenham in November 2005 as part of the deal which took Ben Alnwick in the opposite direction, got his chance in October after Gordon damaged his ankle in training.

He has missed just two games since - the 4-1 home defeat by Bolton which proved to be former boss Roy Keane's last game in charge, and the FA Cup fourth-round replay defeat at Blackburn earlier this month.

Manager Ricky Sbragia said: "Marton has been excellent and this is reward for him.

"You need two top-class keepers and we think we have got that. They will push each other to higher levels."
