Enrique - I want to play my part

19th November 2008

Jose Enrique insists he will remain a Newcastle player even if the club has plans to sell him.

Enrique was touted as a long-term solution to Newcastle's defensive problems when he was signed by then Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce for £6.3million last August.

The Spain Under-21 left-back has made six starts for the club this term and media reports suggested he could be off-loaded by Newcastle interim manager Joe Kinnear in the January transfer window. But Enrique told Spanish newspaper Marca: "I want to complete my contract.

He added: "It doesn't bother me if they want to get rid of me. I have still got a few years left and I want to play an important part in getting the team back to where it deserves to be.

"I am very happy here. I like the city. The fans are 10 out of 10. A club with a history like Newcastle's should not be so low in the table.

"It's killing me that Newcastle are having such a bad season. The fans don't deserve this and I think we are going to be able to get out of this situation. We are only in November and anything can happen.

"We would all like to get into Europe but it's not going to happen."
