Meet the Pundits

CHARLIE WEBSTER
Charlie Webster - football presenter, Football Pools pundit and your personal guide through the new Football Pools website

Top sports presenter Charlie Webster knows her football. A lifelong Sheffield United fan, Charlie's love of football has taken her out to Spain where she was the presenter for Real Madrid TV. She was also the first female to present the live Premier League football games for ESPN and most recently has been snapped up Setanta. And now she's here with The New Football Pools as a pundit and your personal guide through our new website. Hansen and co, watch out, Charlie's here and she's doing it for the girls!

How confident are you going head to head with Hansen, Poll, Cascarino and other full time pundits?
I've got to be pretty confident or I've got no hope! We'll soon find out...I've had some good predictions go my way in the past. I tend to have a good intuition for these things and a bit of inside knowledge always helps! Yeah bring it on!

Is punditry a lost art...or is a lot of the answer down to the presenters prompts and questions?
Far from it. From my own experience, we never used prompts doing live football or predictions, and I'd always have a punt at it. I love opinion in football and everybody has got one and likes to think they know better (half of the time the fans do!) but that's all the fun of it!

What's the best prediction you've ever made?
Real Madrid vs Barcelona, the Spanish Classic, I was working at Real Madrid at the time and I was presenting at the Bernabeu and we were bigging Real up but I had a gut feeling (and a bit of inside info about some unrest) that the Whites were going to lose, so I bet against them with a group of mates (Real fans) and they lost and I won the pot! Sorry Real Madrid!

And what's the worst?
Thinking Sheffield United were going to stay in the Premier League for more than a year!

How did you get your job at Real Madrid TV?
My friend saw the job advert and knew it would be a dream for me. I applied but really didn't think I had a chance, I was pretty young. So I went for various interviews, screen tests and got flown out to Madrid for another interview and got the job out of 1000's of applicants, apparantly! On one of my interview's I had just got back from the 2005 champions league final in Istanbul. I rattled on about how amazing that was for about an hour, I think that's what did it!

What was it like getting such close access to players when you were there, did you get lots of gossip you couldn't report but want to share with us now?
Ha ha nice try! It was an amazing experience, I loved every minute! It was weird seeing someone like Zinedine Zidane all the time, I used to watch him when I was a kid and thought he was a phenomenal player, he's a very nice person too. It taught me so much and completely opened my eyes up to what really goes on behind the scenes at a football club. I'm afraid for the moment that all has to stayed behind closed doors..to be continued!

What do you think of Sheffield Uniteds prospects this season?
To win the championship of course and get automatic promotion to the Premier League. Come on you mighty Blades! Blackwell is our man!

Do you miss watching the Blades in the Premier league or do you like watching games where you might win?
Very funny! Championship games are very exciting just as good as the premier league but without as much money, which is not always a bad thing! We beat Arsenal and Tottenham actually and we'll be back!

You recently filmed our site intro and product demos did you feel a bit of a lemon standing there?
Nah you get used to it. if I felt self-conscious in what I do I'd be a nervous wreck by now! Think I've got used to looking like a bit of a lemon, plus I'd eaten half a bag of haribo by the end of the day, so that helped!
