Meet the Pundits

CHRISTIAN GOODBRAND
Christian Goodbrand - The New Football Pools Pundit and Writer

Meet Christian Goodbrand, one half of our Pundit's Corner writers. As a Spurs fan working up Liverpool, he cops more than his fair share of friendly football banter. But he's the man with football stats seemingly embedded in his head so he's more than equipped to deal with whatever the Liverpool and Everton fans have to throw at him...

What are your football pundit credentials?

I worked for 5 years as a Statto (Football Statistician) for Sky Sports on their live Football coverage providing the likes of Martin Tyler and Andy Gray with information to make them sound knowledgeable.

Just so you know, next time you hear either of them spout out an interesting stat it's not them that's put in the countless hours of research, it's a poor bloke like me scouring through books in a TV truck outside the ground. Ohhh the glamour!

Who is your favourite player?

Gary Mabbutt

Favourite Terrace Chant?

Most are unsuitable but you can't beat the slow, nostalgic version of "Oh When the Spurs Go Marching in!" - it's beautiful.

What Type of Supporter are you?

A bit of an angry one - Spurs tend to do that to you!

Best Half-Time Pie Filling?

Steak/Chicken & Mushroom

What was the best club football match you've ever been to?

The 1991 FA Cup semi-final between Tottenham and Arsenal at Wembley is undoubtedly the best game I've ever been to. Spurs weren't expected to win as Arsenal had lost just once in the League all season and were already crowned champions.

Yet a Gazza free-kick and 2 Gary Lineker strikes saw Tottenham win in style. On a downside, I unfortunately missed the famous Gascoigne free-kick as I was looking elsewhere. I also lost the expensive pie I was eating in the process of celebrating wildly. If I close my eyes I can still hear the distant sound of the fans singing "you've lost that double feeling, ooohh that double feeling, you've lost that double feeling, now it's gone, gone, gone, wooooooooaaaahhh!"

And the best international football match?

The best England match I've attended was also my first trip to Wembley as a 13-year-old. It was a midweek friendly with Holland just months before the 1988 European Championships which they eventually won. The game finished 2-2 though the Dutch were a different class on the night and passed it round for fun with Ruud Gullit pulling the strings. The travelling support made for a colourful sell-out crowd and I was hooked after that.

A close second is England's 2-1 2004 European Championship finals defeat to France in Lisbon. The atmosphere was fantastic for 90 minutes as we played superbly and just as were collectively planning our nights out on the town Zinedine Zidane popped up with 2 goals in the 91st and 93rd minutes. Merci beaucoup you French git!

Tell us about your most surreal football experience?

When working with Sky as a Football Statistician, Iain Dowie decided to recite Irish poetry to me in a hotel bar at 4am in Nuneaton. He also went through his tactical repertoire with various pint glasses, shot glasses as well as salt and pepper pots. You had to be there really!
